MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT/PROVOST AND DEAN, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
April 7, 2008
At last week’s Faculty of Medicine Meeting, we shared the New Scientific Expertise Search Engine that was put together by a team of research faculty and employees in Research Services and IT. This service allows you to search for your UTMB colleagues’ publications. If you do not see your publications listed here (http://research.utmb.edu/USES/USES.asp), please contact Linda Crumpler at lcrumple@utmb.edu, or Ann Elbert at aelbert@utmb.edu. In addition to this database, Research Services has a wealth of institutional information to be used in proposals available here (http://research.utmb.edu/proposalhelp.asp).
Congratulations are in order for several areas in the School of Medicine:
Congratulations to Dr. David Rassin and the staff of the Office of Continuing Education for successfully completing the reaccreditation process. I understand the process included a 207-page self-study document and 50 lbs of audit materials that had to be transported to Chicago in a survey interview.
Congratulations to Dr. Kirk Smith and our medical students past and present whose dedication and hard work brought Frontera de Salud to life and developed it into the model program it is today. Frontera de Salud celebrated its 10-year anniversary this past weekend.
Congratulations to Dr. Lauree Thomas and her team on receiving two NIH research training grants for students, and an excellent score on the third. The grants total more than $1.4 million and are funding programs designed to promote the entry of outstanding medical students into biomedical research centers. The grants are for research training in Infectious Diseases and Inflammatory Diseases, a Research Enrichment and Preparation Training Program, and the Research and Academic Enrichment Program, a program designed to promote the entry of outstanding underrepresented and disadvantaged minority students into biomedical research careers.
I am again asking faculty to join us for the School of Medicine Commencement on May 31st at Moody Gardens. This is a wonderful event for our students and is followed by a reception in the Floral Ballroom. To sign up to join the faculty procession, please contact Denise Gonzalez at djgonzal@utmb.edu or Valerie Carmichael at vcarmich@utmb.edu.
The School of Medicine is joining once again with the Faculty Women’s Club to sponsor a School of Medicine Faculty Mixer with special guests, President David Callender and Mrs. Teri Wenglein-Callender. The Mixer will be held on May 8th, from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Galveston Yacht Club. Please RSVP to sdspeake@utmb.edu with your complete name, degree, department name, and the name of your spouse or guest as you would like it to appear on your name tag.
Sincerely,
Garland D. Anderson, M.D.
Executive Vice President and Provost
Dean of the School of Medicine
