MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF MEDICINE

March 6, 2007

Below is a School of Medicine update:

We are in the process of redesigning the School of Medicine website, and the initial pages are live and ready to view at http://www.som.utmb.edu/.

On Monday, March 12, at 4 p.m. in Shriner’s Burns Auditorium, the Institute for the Medical Humanities is sponsoring the Edgar H. and Lillye Mae Vaughn Lecture in Medical Philosophy and Morality. Therese Jones, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medical Ethics and Humanities at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, will speak on “Ending in Wonder: Margaret Edson’s Wit.”

The UTMB Center for Addiction Research and the UTMB Office of Community Outreach are sponsoring bestselling author John Bradshaw at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 14 in Levin Hall. A nationally renowned expert on family, substance abuse and addiction, Bradshaw will speak on “The Affect System and Brain Research: The New Frontier of Addiction.” Through five New York Times bestsellers – including “Healing the Shame That Binds You” in 1988 and “Family Secrets” in 1995 – Bradshaw pioneered the concept of the “inner child” and brought the term “dysfunctional family” into the mainstream. This event is free and open to the public.

On Thursday, March 15, our students will celebrate Match Day at 11 a.m. in Levin Hall. Please join us for this milestone occasion in the lives of the Class of 2007.

Garland D. Anderson, M.D.
Dean of Medicine
