MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF MEDICINE

morreyIt is my distinct pleasure to announce that a distinguished School of Medicine alumnus, Bernard F. Morrey, M.D., will be the keynote speaker for the School of Medicine’s May 31st Commencement Ceremonies at Moody Gardens. Dr. Morrey is an internationally renowned, board-certified orthopedic surgeon and serves as the Emeritus Chairman and John and Posy Krehbiel Professor of Orthopedics at the Mayo Clinic, where he has served on the Board of Governors.

A 1971 graduate of the School of Medicine, Dr. Morrey served as his class president at UTMB and was a Gold Headed Cane finalist. Prior to medical school Dr. Morrey was a NASA aerospace engineer at the Johnson Space Craft Center. He completed an orthopedics residency at the Mayo Clinic, and earned a Master of Science in Biomechanical Orthopedics at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. After two years in the United States Air Force at the Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Dr. Morrey returned to the Mayo Clinic where he has been a faculty member for over 25 years. He served as Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 1988-1997.

Dr. Morrey specializes in adult reconstruction, with particular emphasis on hip, knee and elbow. His many research interests include the biomechanics of the shoulder and elbow joints, the pre- and post-op biomechanical assessment of elbow surgery, and the effect of defects in bone. Dr. Morrey is a frequent invited speaker in the United States and abroad. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 scientific articles and 13 books. He is Past-President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, and the American Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Morrey was named a Fulbright Scholar in 1987 and has been named as a Best Doctor in America.

He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and Alpha Chi Sigma. He is currently a consultant for the National Football League Players Association and a Trustee of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. An accomplished researcher and scientist, Dr. Morrey holds five patents, including a patent for a femoral component for hip prosthesis. Dr. Morrey has a reputation as an exceptional physician and is President and Mrs. George P. Bush's personal physician.
