2. message from the dean of medicine - CHANGES IN CLINICAL LEADERSHIP
One of our main focuses this year will be to significantly improve access and improve the level of service provided in our clinics. A key to this will be completing the Clinical Strategic Plan before the end of the year. Upon completion of the plan we will move judiciously to implement our newly developed strategies. To accomplish this, we are making some changes in the clinical leadership in the School of Medicine. Dr. Dean Kinsey, in his role as Vice Dean for Clinical Programs and Planning, will be focusing exclusively on finalizing UTMB’s clinical strategic plan. Dr. Donald Prough, Professor and Rebecca Terry White Distinguished Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, will serve as the Chief Physician Executive of the Faculty Group Practice, reporting to the Dean of Medicine. Christine Keating, the Executive Director of UTMB Hospitals and Clinics, will serve as the Faculty Group Practice Chief Operating Officer, reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine. Read the rest of Dr. Anderson's message...

4. 8th Annual Teachers of Distinction (Top Doc) Award
The Teachers of Distinction Awards Banquet is celebrated annually in recognition of excellence in community-based education. This year’s reception, dinner and awards presentations took place on Saturday, October 21st at the San Louis Resort and Conference Center.

The evening began with special recognition of “Community and Master” Preceptors. These awards acknowledge community physicians who have met standards that clearly demonstrate commitment to medical education merit such as consistency in working with SOM students and participation in accredited courses focusing on teaching skills. Owen B. Elington, M.D., J.D. (Sugarland) received Community Preceptor Recognition and Beth Nauert, M.D. (Austin) received Master Preceptor Recognition.

The Austin Educator of the Year Award serves to recognize a UTMB/AMEP faculty educator in Austin for the highest level of achievement in education of UTMB SOM students. Based on nominations by Year 3 and Year 4 Austin-based students, this year’s award was presented to David P. Wright, M.D.

The Regional Medical Education Distinguished Service Recognition recognizes an individual or group that has provided distinguished, longstanding service to community-based education. Recipients have shown a commitment to the community by fostering appreciation for the value of community-based education in the students we serve. Ms. Ingrid Bowden of the East Texas Area Health Education Center (AHEC) receive this year’s award.

Eleven community physicians, from a pool of over 350 active preceptors, were selected for the 2006 Teachers of Distinction (Top Doc) Award. The Top Doc Committee selects final award recipients after nominations are received from course directors and AHEC representatives based on exemplary student evaluations, time and commitment to community-based education, quality of the educational environment and participation in faculty development and community service activities.

Teachers of Distinction have been recognized since 1999 as a means to acknowledge the contributions of community-based physicians who have unselfishly given their time and effort for the education of the next generation of health care professionals. UTMB, the Office of Regional Medical Education and the Area Health Education Centers extend their deepest appreciation to these role models who, in providing quality and compassionate care to their patients, have made a lasting impact on the lives of their students.
