MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF MEDICINE -
Chester R. Burns, M.D., Ph.D.
It
is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of Dr. Chester
Burns. A memorial service was held January 4, 2007at the Moody Memorial
First United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. Dr. Burns’ contributions to UTMB
during his 37-year tenure were numerous, and his passion for and loyalty to
UTMB were contagious. He had a great interest in the life and teachings of
Sir William Osler and had been a member of the American Osler Society since
1972. He was an officer of the AOS and President from 2004 to 2005. Dr.
Burns’ legacy at UTMB will live on in the definitive history of UTMB that he
authored, Saving Lives, Training Caregivers, Making Discoveries, and in the
countless lives he touched with his enthusiasm, dedication and devotion to
UTMB. Donations may be made in his honor to: The Chester Burns Alumni
Scholarship Fund c/o Ann Anderson, The Graduate School of Biomedical
Sciences, 301 University Blvd.

UTMB FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM COULD
REDUCE BREAST CANCER DEATHS IN COMING YEARS

As the second leading cause of cancer death among women, breast cancer is a
concern for every woman. The American Cancer Society estimates that more
than 40,000 U.S. women died of breast cancer in 2005. To alleviate those
odds, Dr. Tuenchit Khamapirad who has dedicated her career to the early detection of
breast cancer, has given a generous cap-stone gift to complete an endowment
that will allow the training of breast imaging specialists.
In her state-of-the-art clinic, Khamapirad directs the breast
imaging section of the department of radiology at UTMB and provides
compassionate care to women facing the possibility that they may have breast
cancer. Early detection is key to surviving the disease but according to Khamapirad ― known to her patients and colleagues as “Dr. TK” ― few
radiologists specialize in breast imaging.
She aims to change that through a breast imaging fellowship made possible by
a fundraising initiative launched last year by Galveston community leaders
Fredell and Lewis Rosen and Margaret and Jim Earthman, and completed with a
gift from Khamapirad. See
full news release and
KUHF article and broadcast about our breast imaging fellowship program.

UTMB RECEIVES GRANT FROM GATES
FOUNDATION
Dr.
Lawrence Stanberry and the Sealy Center for Vaccine Development received
a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant of $9.5 million to work on the
development of influenza vaccines.
The three-year grant
will allow UTMB scientists to help accelerate development of a new kind
of flu vaccine that aims to strengthen people’s natural immunity by
linking the two main mechanisms of immune defense, innate and adaptive
immunity.

Institutional
Limitations for Faculty Temporary License
The Texas Medical Board
has changed the rules for Faculty Temporary Licenses so that they may be
renewed indefinitely. UTMB’s original interest in developing a Faculty
Temporary License was to assist in faculty recruitment by providing a permit
that could be obtained in a shorter period of time than a permanent Texas
license, and also to substitute for the requirement of three years of
graduate medical education for permanent licensure. The limitation to three
renewals (four years total) of the Faculty Temporary License was useful to
both the Texas Medical Board and UTMB because it encouraged timely
completion of examinations required for permanent license and reflected
favorably on UTMB’s production of fully qualified physicians for Texas.
Since these reasons remain valid, UTMB, as an institutional policy, will
limit its faculty to three renewals of the Faculty Temporary License.
Unusual circumstances may occasionally require an exception which only the
Dean of Medicine has authority to make.
The
applications for the Faculty Temporary Licenses are handled currently by the
GME Office. Since TMB now requires credentialing and attestations from the
clinical departments, and it is a faculty appointment process that requires
the Dean’s signature there will need to be increased involvement with the
Medical Staff office.
