A series of All Schools Faculty Orientation Luncheons have been scheduled
featuring presentations by Directors of Core Laboratories who will give an
overview of these areas and discuss the services provided to faculty for
facilitating research. All events will be held at noon, Office of the Dean

ADVANCED FACILITATOR
TRAINING WORKSHOP
The Offices of the Assistant Deans for Educational Affairs and Educational
Development are continuing to offer ½ day workshops for those faculty
members who desire improvement of their problem-based teaching skills and
assessment.
The next workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25, 2005 from 8:00a. –
12:00p. This workshop will be held in Room 1.102 which is located on the
first floor in the Mary Moody Northen Pavilion.
Faculties who will be tutoring in the Integrated Medical Curriculum and
have completed the Introductory Facilitator Training are strongly
encouraged to attend. This advanced training program assists faculty to
foster positive student development as role-models for effective group
process, while developing an esprit de corps among faculty colleagues.
Experienced facilitators will achieve enhanced skills in feedback and
evaluation of student performance.

DR. SUSAN L. ROSENTHAL ACCEPTED AS FELLOW IN ELAM PROGRAM
Susan
L. Rosenthal, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Pediatrics, and Director,
Division of Adolescent & Behavioral Health, recently was accepted as a
member of the 2005-2006 class of Fellows in the Hedwig van Ameringen
Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.
Established in 1995, ELAM offers extensive educational, networking and
mentoring opportunities to support women leaders who aspire to the highest
administrative ranks at academic health centers. The strong competition
for this eleventh ELAM class nearly doubled the number of applicants than
available spaces. The pool of candidates represented 64 respected
academic institutions from across the U.S. and Canada, including eight
that have not previously had Fellows. Since 1997, ten UTMB faculty
have participated in the ELAM fellowship program. The Office of the
Dean of Medicine has provided time and financial support to women faculty
accepted into this program.

3. DRS. GOLDA A. LEONARD AND ELENA VOLPI TO PARTICIPATE IN AAMC MID-CAREER
WOMEN FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
Golda A. Leonard, Ph.D.,
Associate Professor, Department of Otolaryngology, and Elena Volpi, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor,
Department of Internal Medicine, were selected by the AAMC to attend their
Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar which will be
held on July 9-12, 2005 in Lansdowne, Virginia. This seminar is designed
to help women faculty develop the tools and personal contacts needed to
advance to leadership positions.

2005 JEANE B. KEMPNER POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
Jeane B.
Kempner Scholarships have been awarded to six individuals. The Jeane B.
Kempner Scholarships, created under the will of Daniel W. Kempner,
provides to UTMB funds for annual postdoctoral fellowships named in honor
of Jeane B. Kempner. Kempner Fellows may carry out their training with any
faculty member of the UTMB School of Medicine. The Fellowship Committee is
pleased to announce the

(title of their research projects and sponsors are included).

5. FOUR SOM ALUMNI SELECTED FOR ashbel smith distinguished alumnus award
The 2005 UTMB Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus
Award will be given to four UTMB School of Medicine alumni in honor of
their outstanding service to the medical profession. Each year, recipients
for this award are honored at a special Alumni Association reception and
at the School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony. The award is the highest
honor bestowed by the alumni of the School of Medicine. Recipients are as

Call for Proposals - RWJ Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Program
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is now seeking applicants for
its Physician Faculty Scholars Program. This program is intended to
strengthen the leadership and academic productivity of junior medical
school faculty who are dedicated to improving health and health care. Up
to fifteen awards of up to $300,000 over three years will be made
available in 2006 to help young physicians develop their careers in
academic medicine. A medical school may submit one nominee.
If you are or know of
someone who would be interested in applying for this program, please
submit the following information to Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Office of the Dean of Medicine, Route
0133, by Wednesday, June 15, 2005
(the external deadline is August 1, 2005): a copy of the applicant's CV, a
letter of support from the applicant's Chair or Division Chief, and a
proposal for research (maximum length: 13 pages; double-spaced, using a
standard typeface and at least 11 point font).
