William New, BA, MA, Vice President of Research Business and Operations at the New England Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, has been appointed as Associate Dean for Research Services Administration beginning May 1, 2005.

3.  RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED FOR PRESIDENTIAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT LEAVES AWARD

President Stobo has announced the recipients of the 2005 Presidential Faculty Development Leaves Award.  The program, implemented several years ago, is mutually beneficial to the faculty member granted the leave and to the institution. It provides opportunities for faculty to develop new knowledge and skills, and as a result, enhance their abilities to contribute to the creativity and diversity of our missions.  All applications for this award are reviewed by a committee comprised of faculty representing all four schools.  The recipients are: Ronald A. 4.  dr. monique r. ferguson nominated for 2005 Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship Award

Monique R. Ferguson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, was selected to be the School’s nominee for the 2005 Herbert W. Nickens, M.D., Faculty Fellowship Award. Dr. Ferguson is the Director of the HIV Pathogenesis Laboratory. She is actively involved in HIV drug research and development and serves as an educator for HIV prevention. The purpose of the award is to recognize an outstanding junior faculty member who has demonstrated leadership in addressing inequities in medical education and health care; demonstrated efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health-care needs of minorities; and is committed to a career in academic medicine. Because of her scientific work in the laboratory involving HIV drug development, Dr. Ferguson is well positioned for educating minorities with HIV/AIDS infection. Her work with HIV/AIDS in underserved minorities has extended to the national level. See research interests.

5.  DRS. GOLDA LEONARD AND ELENA VOLPI NOMINATED TO PARTICIPATE IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR   

Golda A. Leonard, Ph.D.,  Associate Professor, Department of Otolaryngology, and Elena Volpi, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, have been nominated by the School to submit an application to participate in the AAMC Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar.  This seminar will be held July 9-12, 2005 in Lansdowne, Virginia and is designed to help women faculty develop the tools and personal contacts needed to advance to leadership positions.

6.  Request for Nominations - The AOA Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award

Our School has been invited by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to nominate one faculty member for The Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award either in basic sciences or clinical sciences. The purpose of this award is to recognize gifted teachers for their significant contributions to medical education. The 2005 program will provide up to four awards and each awardee will receive a $10,000 grant; each awardee's nominating institution will receive $2,500 to be dedicated to teaching activities; and each awardee's AΩA chapter participating in the nomination process will receive an award of $1,000 for support of its activities. The deadline is May 6, 2005.  Please see details.
