HONORS AND AWARDS PROGRAM AND WHITE COAT CEREMONY The Honors and Awards Program recognizes outstanding students and faculty; the White Coat Ceremony is the School of Medicine's formal welcoming and introduction of our incoming medical students to the profession of medicine. This event will take place on Monday, August 22, 2005 at 4:30 PM in the Levin Hall Main Auditorium.
2. 2005 SCHOOL OF MEDICINE COMMENCEMENT The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine awarded 190 Doctor of Medicine degrees at its 115th commencement exercises held on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston. 3. DR. RONALD W. LINDSEY APPOINTED AS CHAIR OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY & REHABILITATION Ronald W. Lindsey, M.D., has been appointed as Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, effective September 1, 2005. Dr. Lindsey is presently a Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he has served since 1988, and has served as the Associate Chief of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery Service at Ben Taub General Hospital, as well as Chief of Orthopedic Services. He was Acting Chair of the Department at Baylor from 2000-2002. See full message from the Dean of Medicine.
4. dr. Randall J. Urban appointed as Chair of internal Medicine Randall J. Urban, M.D., has been appointed as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, effective June 23, 2005. Dr. Urban holds the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Distinguished Chair in Internal Medicine and has served as the interim chair of the department since June of 2004. He is currently the Director of the Stark Diabetes Center and the Division of Endocrinology. See full message from the Dean of Medicine.
5. DR. LINDA G. PHILLIPS ELECTED VICE CHAIR OF ABPS Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Truman Graves Blocker, Jr., M.D., Distinguished Chair in Plastic Surgery and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, recently was elected as Vice Chair of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. (ABPS). Dr. Phillips is the first woman to hold this position. The mission of the ABPS is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification and recertification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists. 6. DR. steven a. lieberman NOMINATED FOR AOA GLASER AWARD Steven A. Lieberman, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine and Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, has been nominated for the 2005 Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award. The School of Medicine was invited to nominate one faculty member for this award which recognizes significant contributions to medical education made by gifted teachers. Dr. Lieberman is noted for his high standards of professionalism and excellence in medical education and has received numerous honors and awards for his teaching activities. The selection of Dr. Lieberman as the nominee for this award followed a call for nominations which included broad student participation and the peer judgment of faculty colleagues.
7. DR. DON W. POWELL NAMED 2005 MENTORS RESEARCH SCHOLAR AWARD RECIPIENT BY AGA Dr. Don W. Powell, Professor, Department of Internal Medicine and Associate Dean for Research, recently was named a 2005 Mentors Research Scholar Award recipient by the American Gastroenterological Association. The award recognizes the recipients for their contributions of time, energy and personal resources as mentors. The recipients have Research Scholar Awards endowed in their names with the American Gastroenterological Association Foundation.
8. DR. LISA J. GOULD TO PARTICIPATE IN HARTFORD INTERDISCIPLINARY SCHOLARS COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE Lisa J. Gould, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, has been invited by the American Geriatrics Society to participate in the third annual Hartford Interdisciplinary Scholars Communications Conference, July 11-13, 2005 in Chicago. The Conference, sponsored by The John A. Hartford Foundation and the American Federation for Aging Research, will gather approximately 25 Hartford-supported Scholars in medicine, nursing, and social work from universities across the country. The program offers scholars to build their communications skills and abilities and enhance professional and leadership development, strengthen their ability to participate effectively in interdisciplinary health care settings, and improve their knowledge of the John A. Hartford Foundation's work and other academic leaders in the Hartford network doing research in geriatrics and gerontology.
9. Dr. ernest s. Barratt elected first president of International Society on Impulse Disorders Dr. Ernest S. Barratt, the Marie B. Gale Centennial Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, as well as a psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist, has been elected the first President of the International Society for Research on Impulsivity. The Society comprises psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, scientists, researchers, sociologists and other experts who study and treat impulse control disorders. Such disorders include alcoholism, anorexia and bulimia, gambling addictions and smoking. Impulsivity also encompasses some psychiatric conditions, such as mania and personality disorders, and behaviors such as aggression and anti-social behaviors. Impulsivity helps explain why grocery stores put candy bars or other “impulse buy” items near their checkout counters.
Dr. Barratt is one of the world’s foremost authorities on impulsivity. He has published more than 150 articles in scientific and research journals in a career spanning more than five decades. He is Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. See full story.
10. DR. NORMA H. RUBIN IS FINALIST FOR 2005 TIAA-CREF AWARD Norma H. Rubin, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Neuroscience & Cell Biology, was a finalist for the 2005 TIAA-CREF Distinguished Medical Educator Award. The award, founded by TIAA-CREF and supported by the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science, is to be given annually to honor teaching physicians, nurses and other health care professionals for their outstanding work, significant contributions and exceptional influence in the field of medical education. Nominations were submitted for consideration and evaluation by the award steering committee, with the field narrowed to one winner and five finalists based on their achievements and dedication to medical education. 11. DR. BARRY F. URETSKY INSTALLED AS PRESIDENT OF SCAI Barry F. Uretsky, M.D., Director of the Division of the Cardiovascular Catheterization Laboratory and Director of the Division of Cardiology, was installed as the 28th President of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), during the Society’s Annual Scientific Sessions. Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., SCAI is a more than 3,300-member professional organization representing invasive and interventional cardiologists. SCAI’s mission is to promote excellence in invasive and interventional cardiovascular medicine through physician education and representation, and advancement of quality standards to enhance patient care. 12. Dr. andrew j. kurtz selected as AAAS/NIH SCIENCE POLICY FELLOW Dr. Andrew J. Kurtz, Jeane B. Kempner Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Human Biological Chemistry and Genetics, recently has been selected as a 2005-2006 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Science Policy Fellow through a program sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This year, Dr. Kurtz is one of 11 candidates who will be placed at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, where he has accepted a position in the Office of Technology and Industrial Relations, Office of the Director at the National Cancer Institute. Prior to beginning his year-long fellowship appointment in September, Dr. Kurtz will join the entire 2005-2006 class of approximately 100 AAAS Fellows to participate in a two-week orientation program on executive branch and legislative affairs. 13. SEALY CENTER ON AGING RECEIVES PAHO/WHO DESIGNATION The Sealy Center on Aging recently was designated a Collaborating Center on Aging and Health by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization. The mission of the Collaborating Center is to improve the health of Hispanic older adults through collaborative research, education and clinical training. The Center will support a visiting scholars program for faculty, fellows and students. The Center will also encourage, conduct and disseminate collaborative research, education and clinical training activities with partner institutions in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
14. SCHOLARS IN EDUCATION PROGRAM The Office of Educational Development has developed a formal faculty development program for present and future leaders in the education programs of the University of Texas Medical Branch.
The Scholars in Education Program is an initiative for UTMB and UT Austin health professions faculty who wish to enhance their scholarship in educational research and curriculum development, to improve their teaching skills, and to advance their academic careers. Instructional delivery is through inquiry-based, interactive class sessions along with distance learning formats (Galveston-Austin).
The 18-month program meets one evening per month and is open to faculty in all Schools who complete a short personal statement and are nominated by their deans, department chairs or division heads. Selection will be made in July for the next cohort of Scholars beginning the evening of September 13, 2005. Faculty selected will be designed “UTMB Scholars in Education” and will be awarded a certificate upon completion of the program.

15. AAMC Minority Faculty Career Development Seminar The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Minority Faculty Career Development Seminar will be held on September 17-19, 2005 in Washington, DC. The program is designed for junior faculty (senior fellows, instructors, and assistant professors) who are members of underrepresented minority groups and who aspire to positions of leadership in academic medicine. Enrollment is limited to 60 participants.
Candidates applying to this program should submit the following information to Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Office of the Dean of Medicine, Route 0133: 1) a one page summary of their goals for the seminar and how it will impact their career; 2) a copy of their CV; and 3) a letter of support from their Chair or Division Chief - this letter should describe how the applicant's goals for attending the seminar relate to his or her work and professional aspirations. Since enrollment is limited, please submit this information by Friday, July 15, 2005. The Office of the Dean of Medicine will provide financial support for the registration fee, travel and other related expenses for one member of the Faculty of Medicine to undertake this training.
