UTMB's Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium Conference will be held March 3-4, 2005. The Undergraduate Research Symposium is a national conference designed to encourage students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical sciences and provide faculty mentors and advisors with resources for facilitating students' success. The event is sponsored by UTMB's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and hosted by its Committee for Diversity in Graduate Education and the Office of Educational Outreach. 2.  PRESIDENT RECEIVES AWARD FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT EXCELLENCE

The Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership presented its 2005 Quasar Award for Economic Development Excellence to UTMB President John D. Stobo at a special dinner January 28th. The Quasar Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated a strong and continual effort to support the business foundations of the greater Bay Area Houston communities. The award committee is made up of 15 BAHEP members. "Dr. John Stobo has led the evolution of UTMB-Galveston from a local institution to a major regional economic force," said Sandy Johnson, incoming BAHEP chairman and Barrios Technology president. "Through his leadership, UTMB is now recognized by the ‘mainland’ as a true asset to Bay Area Houston. I am proud that BAHEP recognized and rewarded his accomplishments with the Quasar Award." 3DR. J. REGINO PEREZ-POLO APPOINTED AS CHAIR OF HBC&G

J. Regino Perez-Polo, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Human Biological Chemistry and Genetics (HBC&G), has recently accepted the position of Chair of the Department of HBC&G for a period of three years.   He has served  as Chair, ad interim, since September, 2003.

4. Harrold McDermott Joins School of Medicine as CFO

Mr. Harrold McDermott, CPA, MBA, CMPE, was appointed as CFO of the School of Medicine effective February 1, 2005. Harrold will be responsible for all aspects of finance operations of the School of Medicine, and in this critical role will assist the Dean of Medicine in the overall financial planning and processes of the School.

5.  ELAM PROGRAM
The following faculty have been nominated by the School to submit applications to participate in the 2005-2006 Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women:

Anne Hudson Jones, Ph.D., Hobby Family Professor in the Medical Humanities, and Graduate Program Director, Institute for the Medical Humanities

Susan L. Rosenthal, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Pediatrics, and Director, Division of Adolescent & Behavioral Health

Karen Szauter, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, and Medical Director, Standardized Patient Program

6.  AMA residency review committees

The following faculty have been nominated by the School for appointment to the American Medical Association Residency Review Committees:

  • Residency Review Committee - Family Practice: Alvah R. Cass, M.D., S.M.. Associate Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Family Medicine.   Dr. Cass has continued to demonstrate his dedication to teaching at UTMB. He has served as a mentor and advisor for three different residency directors. He continues to receive among the highest ratings in the residents’ evaluations and was given the Award of Excellence as Teacher of the Year in 1998. Nationally, he has served as a written examination Item Writer and member of the Test Review Committee, Certification and Recertification Examination, for the American Board of Family Practice.

  • Residency Review Committee - Surgery: B. Mark Evers, M.D., Robertson-Poth Distinguished Chair in General Surgery and Director of the Sealy Center for Cancer Cell Biology.  Dr. Evers is truly distinguished by his unswerving dedication to student and resident education. As a resident at the University of Louisville, he was given the John W. Price Award for Teaching Excellence. The Surgical Housestaff at UTMB has given him the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award on two separate occasions. Widely recognized by his colleagues and peers as an outstanding leader in education, he serves as a member of the American College of Surgeons Surgical Research and Education Committee.

  • Residency Review Committee - Dermatology: Richard F. Wagner, Jr., M.D., J.D., Edgar B. Smith M.D. Professor in Dermatology, Deputy Chair in the Department of Dermatology and Director of the Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology Clinical Service.  Dr. Wagner is truly devoted to undergraduate and graduate medical education. He personally mentors every UTMB dermatology resident rotating through the Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology Clinical Service. He serves as the advisor to the undergraduate medical students interested in dermatology as well as supervising their research rotations for those who have submitted a Senior Honors Thesis. Dr. Wagner’s dedication to residency teaching is underscored by his serving as a member of the Dermatology Teachers Exchange Group and the American Academy of Dermatology Minority Mentorship Program. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications on medical education. He currently serves as the Dermatology Clerkship Director and the Faculty Advisor for the Dermatology Interest Group and the Dermatology Honors Program.

7.  DR. CHERYL VAIANI IS Visiting Professor AT the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (MEXICO)
Cheryl Vaiani, Ph.D.,
Clinical Ethicist, Institute for the Medical Humanities, and Assistant Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine & Community Health, serves as a Visiting Professor in the Bioethics Course for freshman medical students in the International Program of the School of Medicine of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (MEXICO). She spends 2 weeks talking to them about ethical issues with particular emphasis on differences between professional and ethical practices and standards in Mexico and the United States since a large majority of these students intend to practice in the United States.

8.  visit of dr. rosemary duda

The Department of Surgery is one of two departments nationwide chosen to host an Association of Women Surgeons Visiting Professor. Dr. Rosemary Duda, Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School, will lecture on “The Privilege of Being a Mentor,” Tuesday, February 22 at 4:00 p.m., 6.106, McCullough Classroom. She will also give a presentation at Surgery Grand Rounds entitled, “Career Advancement of Women in Academic Medicine: How Are We Doing?” Wednesday, February 23 at 8 AM, Shriners Burns Auditorium.

10 Request for Nominations - 2005 Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship Award

The Association of American Medical Colleges is requesting nominations for the 2005 Herbert W. Nickens, M.D., Faculty Fellowship Award-A Program to Assist Medical Schools Achieve Their Diversity Objectives and Eliminate Health-Care Disparities. A medical school may nominate one (1) current faculty member for this award. A candidate must:

· be a United States citizen or permanent resident;

· hold the rank of assistant professor in an accredited U.S. allopathic medical school department;

· have held the assistant professor position for no more than three (3) years; and

· hold either a M.D. or Ph.D., or other doctoral degree.

The recipient receives a $15,000 grant to support his or her academic and professional activities. The award recognizes an outstanding junior faculty member who has demonstrated leadership in addressing inequities in medical education and health care; demonstrated efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health-care needs of minorities; and is committed to a career in academic medicine. If you are, or know of someone who might be interested in applying for this program, please send the following information to Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Office of the Dean of Medicine, Route 0133: a personal statement from the applicant that does not exceed five (5) double-spaced pages discussing his or her motivations and objectives for a career in academic medicine, research interests, and specific details on how the fellowship funds will be used, a current copy of the applicant's CV, and a letter of support from the applicant's Chair or Division Chief. 11. Statistics and Epidemiology Course for those interested in Clinical Research

"Epidemiological & Statistical Methods in Clinical Investigation" is a series of 14 hourly sessions offered by the Department of Preventive Medicine & Community Health (Hari H. Dayal, Ph.D., F.A.C.E., Course Director), General Clinical Research Center, and Clinical Research Education Office as a module in the course, “Clinical Research: Tools & Techniques.” This module will begin Monday, February 21, 2005, 5:15 p.m., Children’s Hospital, Room 2.312. The sessions provide an overview of epidemiological and statistical methods in research involving human subjects. Participants may attend any or all sessions. A brochure further describing the sessions is available upon request or at http://www.utmb.edu/gcrc/education/Ed_StatModule.htm.  CME and GME credits are available for all sessions.

The course fee of $45 covers registration, GME credit, letter of completion, and refreshments. An additional $45 covers optional CME credit for physicians.
