2.   UTMB SIGMA XI CHAPTER RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING CHAPTER PERFORMANCE

The UTMB chapter of the scientific research society Sigma Xi recently was awarded the Sigma Xi Certificate of Excellence for outstanding chapter activity during the year ending June 30, 2003. Certificates are awarded for exceptional activity and innovative chapter programs, particular those that address the four major issues at the foundation of the society's mission: honor in science and engineering, science education, science policy and the public understanding of science. The current members at UTMB were delighted to be one of only eight chapters recognized this year with a certificate of excellence.  If you are interested in joining Sigma Xi, or would like to reactivate your membership (no back payments necessary), please contact the Chapter secretary, Dr. Ulli Budelmann at bubudelm@utmb.edu or by phone at 409-772-3661.

3.   DR. ANNE HUDSON JONES FEATURED IN WOMEN'S HEALTH IN PRIMARY CARE ARTICLE

4.   DR. ELLEN MORE RECEIVES AWARD FROM THE NEH   

Ellen S. More, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health, and Member, Institute for the Medical Humanities, has been awarded a fellowship for 2004-2005 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to pursue research on her next book, Sexuality and American Society.  See faculty profile.

5.  DRS. SUSAN M. GERIK AND LISA R. NASH NOMINATED TO PARTICIPATE IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR    

Susan M. Gerik, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, and Lisa R. Nash, D.O., Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine, have been nominated by the School to submit an application to participate in the AAMC Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar.  This seminar will be held July 10-13, 2004 in Washington and is designed to help women faculty develop the tools and personal contacts needed to advance to leadership positions.

6.   2004 PRESIDENTIAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT LEAVES AWARDED

President Stobo has announced the recipients of the 2004 Presidential Faculty Development Leaves Award.  The program, implemented several years ago, is aimed at providing opportunities for faculty to develop new skills, and as a result, enhance the abilities of the faculty member to contribute to the creativity and diversity of our missions.  All applications for this award are reviewed by a committee comprised of faculty representing all four schools.  The recipients are: James S. Goodwin, M.D., Ellen S. More, Ph.D., and Nancy K. Wills, Ph.D.  Read the complete memo from Dr. Stobo.

7. funding opportunities - the james w. mclaughlin fellowship fund

The James W. McLaughlin Fellowship Fund Committee announces the following funding opportunities for predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows:

  •  The Award for Excellence in Infection and Immunity Research will consist of $300 and a bronze medallion for each recipient. If you would like to nominate a particular fellow, please submit information as complete as possible on his/her research including completed, submitted or published papers, copy of CV, and why you feel this fellow should receive the award. Please direct any specific questions to D’lisa Creager at 772-3744.  Nominations for this award should be received no later than March 22, 2004 and should be sent electronically to the McLaughlin Fellowship Office via email at docreage@utmb.edu.

  • Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships: Postdoctoral applicants must have received a doctoral degree before the September 1, 2004 begin date. They are ineligible if they have previously held a faculty position or have held postdoctoral positions for five (5) years or more by the time this fellowship would begin. Predoctoral students must be actively enrolled in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and must be in good standing in both their sponsoring department and the Graduate School. Students on probation are ineligible to apply. Instructions and application forms have been recently updated and are available at http://research.utmb.edu/intramural_funding/.  Questions regarding the fellowships should be directed to Dr. Lynn Soong at 772-8149. Applications will not be accepted after the April 15, 2004 deadline.

8.  CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS - ACADEMIC CHAIRPERSONS CONFERENCE

The Academic Chairpersons conference is an annual forum where academic chairpersons, administrators, and faculty from all areas of higher education share the most successful, innovative ideas and strategies to assist each other in becoming more effective in their positions. The format of the conference is concurrent sessions of papers, workshops, and panel discussions, as well as featured presentations by prominent figures in higher education. Each year there is a different overall theme, but the emphasis of every conference is always to provide practical, usable information in a climate of open discussion of common concerns.

Below is a list of School of Medicine faculty who were recommended by the Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Committee and/or approved by the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Medicine for promotion and/or tenure.  These actions are effective September 1, 2004 and are pending System approval:

 

PATRICK A. ADEGBOYEGA, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, be awarded tenure at his current rank, effective September 1, 2004.

XIAODONG CHENG, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, be promoted to Associate Professor and awarded tenure, effective September 1, 2004.

SUSAN M. GERIK, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, be promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics, effective September 1, 2004.

ARISTIDES P. KOUTROUVELIS, M.D. FCCP, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, Department of Anesthesiology, be promoted to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, effective September 1, 2004.

FRANCES D. NESTI, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, be promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics, effective September 1, 2004.

IRINA PIKULEVA, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, be promoted to Associate Professor, effective September 1, 2004.

GURJEET S. SHOKAR, M.D., Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, be promoted to Associate Professor of Family Medicine, effective September 1, 2004.

SHU-YUAN XIAO, M.D., Associate Professor, Departments of Pathology and Internal Medicine, be awarded tenure at his current rank, effective September 1, 2004.

SHAWN D. NEWLANDS, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., Professor and Chair, Department of Otolaryngology, is appointed to the HARRY CAROTHERS WEISS CHAIR IN OTOLARYNGOLOGY, effective February 1, 2004 through January 31, 2009.
 

CLAUDIO SOTO, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Neurology, is appointed to the CHARLOTTE WARMOTH PROFESSORSHIP IN NEUROLOGY, effective January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2009.
