Anne
Hudson Jones, Ph.D., Member, Institute for the Medical Humanities (IMH)
and Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine & Community Health,
received coverage in articles published in Women's Health In Primary Care (January/February 2004)
and Clinician News
(April
2004). The articles were from an interview with Dr. Jones who explained
why reading medical novels or keeping a journal detailing troublesome
cases can help clinicians provide better patient care.
In an article
published in the Chronicle of Higher Education (04/23/04)
entitled “Slices of Life and Death,” artist and illustrator Sue Cole
discusses the woodcut art of Eric N. Avery, M.D., Associate Professor of
Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Associate Member of the IMH. The
article included a photo of Dr. Avery’s 2000 work “Dear Robert,” a
linoleum block overprint on digital photograph. The artwork is from the
exhibition "Doctor's Cuts: Prints by Eric Avery," at St. Lawrence
University through June 7.

The Faculty Early
Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that
offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards for new
faculty members. The CAREER program recognizes and supports the early
career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who are most
likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century. CAREER awardees
will be selected on the basis of creative career-development plans that
effectively integrate research and education within the context of the
mission of their organization. Such plans should build a firm foundation
for a lifetime of integrated contributions to research and education. NSF
encourages submission of CAREER proposals from new faculty members at all
CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of
underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.
NSF CAREER proposals can designate the Microbial Observatories and
Microbial Interactions and Processes (MO/MIP) program as the area of
proposal consideration.
Each year NSF selects nominees for the Presidential Early Career Awards
for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from among the most meritorious new
CAREER awardees. The PECASE program recognizes outstanding scientists and
engineers who, early in their careers, show exceptional potential for
leadership at the frontiers of knowledge. This Presidential Award is the
highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on scientists and
engineers beginning their independent careers.
Award information: For the FY 2003 competition, the minimum CAREER award,
including indirect costs, will total $400,000 over a 5-year period with
the following exception. Applicants to the Biological Sciences Directorate
(BIO) must submit budget requests for a minimum of $500,000 (approximately
$100,000 per year) for the 5-year duration.
Based on the availability of funds, the
minimum amounts for FY 2004 and FY 2005 may change. Check the CAREER Web
page (http://www.nsf.gov/career
<http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?nsf02111>
) three months prior to the submission deadline for updated information.
General inquiries regarding Faculty Early Career
Development (CAREER) Program should be made to Division CAREER contacts
listed on the CAREER Web page, at
http://www.nsf.gov/career.
Proposal Deadline:
July 20, 2004
(due by 5 p.m. proposer's local time).

The Association of
American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Early Career Women Faculty Professional
Development Seminar will be held December 4-7, 2004 in Santa Fe, New
Mexico. The seminar is for women early in their first faculty appointment
who are aiming for a position of leadership in academic medicine
(associate professors are not eligible). It is targeted primarily at
physicians but is also pertinent for Ph.D. scientists. The number of
participants is limited to 120 to keep workshops small. The objectives of
the program are as follows:
--To assist each participant in creating an agenda for working toward her
professional development goals.
--To provide participants with insights in the realities of building a
career in academic medicine, into key ways in which academic medicine is
changing, and into leadership qualities demanded by these realities and
changes.
--To help participants to expand their network of colleagues and role
models and to bring new energy to their networking.
--To assist participants in identifying the skill areas on which they most
need to work and give them a start in developing them.
Since this meeting has been consistently oversubscribed and attendance is
limited, early application is encouraged. Those interested in applying for
this program should submit the following information to the Office of the
Dean of Medicine-Route 0133, ATTN: Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, by Friday, June 25th, 2004 (the
external deadline is July 23, 2004): a one page summary of their goals for
the seminar and how it will impact their career, a copy of their CV, and a
letter of support from their Chair or Division Chief addressed to the
Meetings Registrar, AAMC, 2450 N Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037-1126.
This letter should describe how the applicant's goals for attending the
seminar relate to her work and professional aspirations. The Office of the
Dean of Medicine will provide financial support for the registration fee,
travel and other related expenses for two members of the Faculty of
Medicine to undertake this training.
