INTRODUCTION OF SOM e-NEWS

1.         UPCOMING EVENTS

 

·         ADVANCED MENTORING WORKSHOP

            The Office of the Dean of Medicine has provided several mentoring workshops to develop a broader understanding of the importance of professional mentoring and career development.  To keep the momentum going, an advanced mentoring workshop has been scheduled on January 21st for School of Medicine faculty.  The workshop is aimed at increasing the effectiveness of professional mentoring and identifying support processes that will enable the mentor and mentee maintain a successful partnership.  Guest speakers, Dr. Jerry Daniels, Professor and Associate Chair for Practice Development, Department of Internal Medicine, and Dr. Alice Anne O’Donell, Professor, Department of Family Medicine, will add their perspectives for successful mentoring.

 

            The workshop will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2004, 12N-1 PM, 1.504, Rebecca Sealy.  Lunch will be served.  Space is limited, therefore participation will be on a first come, first serve basis.  Please RSVP to Ms. Eartha Dotson by email at edotson@utmb.edu or call extension 22671.

  • FACULTY OF MEDICINE MEETING & NEW FACULTY RECEPTION

The February Faculty of Medicine Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2004, 4:30 PM, Levin Hall Main Auditorium.  At this meeting the Dean of Medicine, with the assistance of his staff, will present the "State of the School."  A reception honoring new School of Medicine faculty (appointed between 12/01/03-01/31/04) will be held immediately after the meeting in the Levin Hall Dining Room.

 

  • MATCH WEEK

2.   ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGE IN THE OFFICE OF VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH

President Stobo announced last week that Dr. Adrian Perachio has decided to resign his position as Vice President for Research in early 2004 in order to assume a hands-on leadership role in advancing the university’s long-standing relationship with the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston. Dr. Perachio has served as Vice President since April 2001.

 

A nationally recognized expert in vestibular neurophysiology, Dr. Perachio will focus on developing and directing a space life sciences center in partnership with the JSC. The proposed center will aim to enhance existing research and training collaborations and establish facilities and programs to support basic and applied research on the effects of the space environment on human health.

 

Dr. Perachio will also continue to spearhead UTMB’s participation in an important research coalition with the University of Texas at Austin and the Central Texas Veterans Administration, a relationship he was instrumental in shaping.

3.   TDCJ HOSPITAL MEDICAL DIRECTOR ANNOUNCEMENT

Dr. Michael M. Warren has accepted the position of Medical Director at the TDCJ Hospital.  Dr. Roger D. Soloway will serve as Associate Medical Director.

4.   UTMB RESEARCHERS FIND THAT COMMON REMEDY FOR CHILDREN’S EAR INFECTIONS MAY PROLONG DISEASE

A study lead by Tasnee Chonmaitree, M.D., Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology, shows that antihistamines to relieve children’s ear infection symptoms may do more harm than good.  This study has received extensive coverage including publication in the Journal of Pediatrics (September 2003), American Academy of Pediatrics News (December 2003), and Reader’s Digest.  Reuters published the story before it was picked up by approximately 200 web sites including Google News, Yahoo News, Yale-New Haven Website, etc.  The story will also run in Prevention Magazine (April 2004 issue) and Health Magazine

5.  UTMB DIVISION OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR    

UTMB’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Karen Sexton, and Chair of Surgery, Dr. Courtney Townsend, Jr., recently announced the appointment of a new Medical Director for the Division of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Brian Zachariah, former Medical Director of the Las Colinas Medical Center in Dallas, has dedicated his career to the field of emergency medicine and has held various positions at Baylor College of Medicine, UT-Health Science Center in Houston, Hermann Hospital, the Houston Fire Department and UT-Southwestern Medical Center.  Read the current news release on his appointment in the UTMB Newsroom.

6.   new faculty honored at reception

8. Office of regional medical education web site

The Office of Regional Medical Education (ORME) announces their newly designed web site, located at http://meded.utmb.edu/orme/.  The office is continuing to add more information and resource links to benefit students, UTMB faculty and community preceptors.  The site currently is open for all to gain insight into the development of the ORME, goals in fostering skills in medical education, and opportunities available for training experiences in Austin. Contact information is provided on the site should you have any questions or wish to share comments.

9.  PROMOTION AND TENURE ACTIONS

Below is a list of School of Medicine faculty who were recommended by the Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Committee and/or approved by the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Medicine for promotion and/or tenure.  These actions are effective September 1, 2004 and are pending System approval:

 

AMR ABOULEISH, M.D., M.B.A., Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Department of Anesthesiology, be promoted to Professor of Anesthesiology.

 

JEAN L. FREEMAN, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Departments of Internal Medicine and PM & CH, be promoted to Professor.

 

WILLIAM F. HARPER, M.D., Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, be promoted to Associate Professor of Internal Medicine.

 

BERNARD M. KARNATH, M.D., Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, be promoted to Associate Professor of Internal Medicine.

 

J. PATRICK KEARNEY, Jr., M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, be promoted to Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.

 

SANJIV SUR, M.D., Associate Professor, Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, be promoted to Professor.

 

CHRISTINE B. TURLEY, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Department of Pediatrics, be promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics.

10.  APPOINTMENTS TO ENDOWED POSITIONS

The following faculty were appointed to endowed chairs/professorships:

 

EDWARD R. SHERWOOD, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, is appointed to the JAMES F. ARENS CHAIR IN ANESTHESIOLOGY effective November 1, 2003 through October 31, 2008.

 

VICTOR S. SIERPINA, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine, is the inaugural holder of the W.D. AND LAURA NELL NICHOLSON FAMILY PROFESSORSHIP IN INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE effective November 1, 2003 through October 31, 2008.
