  • MENTORING WORKSHOPS

As part of the School’s mentoring initiative, the Office of the Dean of Medicine will offer a workshop designed for new & junior faculty in beginning and/or continuing their mentoring relationship.  In this workshop, we will address some of the issues related to mentoring, and participants are encouraged to bring a question or issue to the workshop for discussion.

  • STATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY COURSE FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN CLINICAL RESEARCH

 “Epidemiological & Statistical Methods in Clinical Investigation,” is a series of 14 hourly sessions offered by the Department of Preventive Medicine & Community Health (Hari H. Dayal, Ph.D., F.A.C.E., Course Director), General Clinical Research Center, and Clinical Research Education Office as a module in the course, “Clinical Research: Tools & Techniques.”  This module will begin Monday, February 23, 2004, 5:15 p.m., Children’s Hospital, Room 2.312. The sessions provide an overview of epidemiological and statistical methods in research involving human subjects. Participants may attend any or all sessions. A brochure further describing the sessions is available upon request or on the Internet at:  http://www.utmb.edu/gcrc/education/Ed_StatModule.htm  CME and GME credits are available for all sessions.  


To register, complete and submit the registration form located at the brochure internet site, or contact Cheryl Benskin of the Clinical Research Education Office by email chbenski@utmb.edu or phone 772-1484. The course fee of $45 covers registration, GME credit, letter of completion, and refreshments. An additional $45 covers optional CME credit for physicians. (Those who have already registered for this year’s course do not need to register again for this module.)  The schedule of this and other components of the Clinical Research Education and Training Program are available on the GCRC web page http://www.utmb.edu/gcrc/.

 

  • EDUCATION DIMENSION SERIES

The Office of Educational Development announces the Education Dimension Series (EDS) topic for March 4, 2004 will be: “Writing Exams to Get Results.”  The Education Dimension Series is an informal medical education skills activity for faculty, primarily for SOM faculty/staff, and is held the first Thursday of each month from 12:00 Noon – 1:00p. in Suite 1.102, Mary Moody Northen Conference Room, Mary Moody Northen Pavilion. 3.   DR. ELLEN MORE, VISITING CURATOR FOR NEW WEB SITE ABOUT WOMEN PHYSICIANS

Ellen More, Ph.D.,  Member, Institute for the Medical Humanities, and Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health, was quoted in an article (January 21st) in the Chicago Tribune about a new web site called Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians.  The site, designed by the National Library of Medicine, offers engrossing profiles of more than 300 women, many written by the physicians themselves. 4.   WOMEN FACULTY NOMINATED FOR ELAM PROGRAM     

The following faculty have been nominated by the School to submit applications to participate in the 2004-2005 Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women:

 

Sandra S. Hatch, M.D.,, Ruth Levy Kempner Professor and Vice Chair and Director of Clinical Operations in the Department of Radiation Oncology

Karin N. Westlund High, Ph.D.., Professor in the Department of Anatomy & Neurosciences

Cheryl S. Watson, Ph.D.., Professor in the Department of Human Biological Chemistry & Genetics and Associate Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Women’s Health.

5.  DR. RAMON FLICK NOMINATED FOR ELLISON MEDICAL FOUNDATION NEW SCHOLARS PROGRAM      

Ramon Flick, Ph.D.., Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, has been chosen to be the nominee from UTMB for the Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholars Program in Global Infectious Disease for 2004.  The award is designed for new independent investigators of outstanding promise in basic biomedical research or clinical sciences relevant to understanding global infectious diseases.

6.   DR. CHERYL WATSON NOMINATED FOR MARY KAY ASH FOUNDATION GRANT

Dr. Cheryl Watson will represent UTMB as the nominee for the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation Innovative/Translational Cancer Research Program Award.  Her research proposal is titled, “Clinical Significance of Membrane Estrogen and Progesterone Receptors in Human Breast Tumors.”   See Dr. Watson’s research interests.

7. dr. alice j. speer appointed to review committee for elam

Alice J. Speer, M.D., Associate Professor and Director, Division of General Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, recently was appointed to the Admissions Committee of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.  The Admissions Committee, which includes Deans and ELAM alumnae, reviews all application materials submitted by the candidates to the program.  ELAM is widely recognized as an excellent leadership educational program for women and receives applications from medical and dental schools throughout the U.S. and Canada.  Dr. Speer was the first faculty member from UTMB to attend the ELAM fellowship program in 1997.   In addition, she was elected President of the Society for Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (SELAM) for 2002-2003.  SELAM is an international organization dedicated to the advancement and promotion of women to executive positions in academic health centers through programs that enhance professional and career development and provide networking and mentoring opportunities. SELAM was formed in 1997 by alumnae from the ELAM Program.

8.  DR. THOMAS A. BLACKWELL ELECTED TO ABIM BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Thomas A. Blackwell, M.D., Professor, Department of Internal Medicine and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, has been elected as a member of the Board of Directors for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) beginning July 1, 2004 for a two-year term. The Board is comprised of 29 Directors and sets policy for all of the ABIM's programs.

9.  THE DEAN PRESENTS STATE OF THE SCHOOL AND WELCOMES NEW FACULTY

Dean Lemon and his administrative staff presented the “State of the School” at the Faculty of Medicine Meeting held on February 3rdSchool of Medicine administration discussed current projects as well as future plans and goals.  This special meeting, an important communication tool, is an annual event.  In addition, new faculty were introduced at the meeting and honored at a welcoming reception immediately following the meeting.  See list of new faculty

10.  REQUEST FOR NOMINATIONS FOR TWO AWARDS

      The following are requests for nominations for two awards recognizing individuals for their contributions to medicine:

  • The American Philosophical Society is seeking nominees for the Judson Daland Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Investigation, which recognizes achievement in patient-oriented research. The $18,000 award will be presented at the APS annual meeting in November.  Candidates (who should be no more than 15 years beyond receipt of the M.D. degree) must be nominated by the clinical department chair of a medical school or hospital. Nomination letters must include an abstract of the work to be honored, a CV of the nominee, and three additional letters of support.   • The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine announces its Alma Dea Morani, M.D. Renaissance Woman Award, which honors the awardee with a sculpture representing humanism in medicine and a modest honorarium.  The Award will be presented in conjunction with an annual lectureship in association with The College of Physicians on (date to be confirmed) in Philadelphia (travel and accommodation expenses will be covered).  The Awardee will deliver a 20 – 30 minute presentation during the College of Physicians annual meeting.  The submission deadline is April 1.  Contact: (484) 945-2106; www.fhwim.org

11. AMERICAN MEDICAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCEMENT

The American Medical Student Association announces its request for applications for "Examining Student Education and Action on Health Disparities," a conference to be held March 17, 2004. The conference is a unique opportunity for medical student/faculty teams to attend a one-day conference together to improve medical education and student-initiated service learning and advocacy efforts to combat domestic racial and ethnic health disparities. In order to apply for this highly competitive conference, a team of two students and one faculty mentor must obtain a letter of support from the medical school Dean (or equivalent) and submit a short essay. Applications are available at www.amsa.org/conv/events.cfm.  Partial travel awards of approximately $400 per team will be made by the AMSA Foundation through a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Further information about travel awards and a bill for the registration fee will be disseminated to participant teams after the Advisory Committee receives and reviews applications.

12. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR PHYSICIANS IN ACADEMIC HEALTH CENTERS

The Leadership Development Program for Physicians in Academic Health Centers will be held in Boston at the Harvard School of Public Health, October 17-19, 2004.  The Program is designed for physicians in administrative positions in academic health centers, which includes chief of a clinical division or section within a clinical department, vice chair of a clinical department, medical director, vice president of medical affairs, associate dean for clinical affairs, etc.  Applications should be submitted by May 20, 2004.  Detailed information may be found at the following web site: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/ccpe/programs/LDP.shtml
