8 Consumer publication lists nine UTMB doctors as top specialists in the U.S.

The consumer guide America’s Top Doctors has once again named nine UTMB faculty members among the country’s top specialists in their respective fields. The physicians listed in 2004 were also listed in the 2003 edition of the publication.

The doctors listed are Drs. Karl Anderson and P. Jay Pasricha in gastroenterology; Dr. Gary Hankins in maternal and fetal medicine; Dr. Michael Malloy in neonatal and perinatal medicine; Dr. William Mitch in nephrology; Dr. Byron Bailey in otolaryngology; Drs. David Walker and Roberto Logrono in pathology, and Dr. Robert Hirschfeld in psychiatry.

The selection process was based on the results of an extensive survey mailed to randomly selected, board-certified, medical specialists who were asked to nominate physicians who displayed excellence in academic medicine, research and patient care. The survey also asked each respondent to nominate physicians they would feel confident sending members of their families to.

9 CENTER FOR ADDICTION RESEARCH 2004 PILOT GRANT PROGRAM ANNOUNCES AWARDEES

The Center for Addiction 2004 Research Pilot Grant Program funds research in the mechanisms and processes underlying drug abuse and addiction. The Center is proud to announce the following three grantees whose projects were awarded $30,000 each for one year to gather data to apply for external funding.

Proteome Map of Nicotine Addiction, Principal Investigators Kelly T. Dineley, Ph.D. (Neurology), and Larry Denner, Ph.D. (Internal Medicine; Stark Diabetes Center). Drs. Dineley and Denner are employing a systems biology approach to understand how proteins regulate nicotine-induced addictive behaviors. This group will study signaling mechanisms and differentially-expressed proteins and phosphoproteins that subserve acute and chronic nicotine actions in brain reward circuits.

Alpha-1C L-type Calcium Channels in Alcoholism, Principal Investigator Philip T. Palade, Ph.D. (Neuroscience and Cell Biology). Dr. Palade in collaboration with Giulio Taglialatela, Ph.D. (Neuroscience and Cell Biology) will conduct research to determine whether the upregulation of alpha-1C L-type calcium channels evoked by chronic ethanol exposure contributes to its downstream effects and the physiological consequences of alcoholism.

In Situ Optical Determination of 5-HT2AR-PDZ Interactions, Principal Investigator Todd C. Pappas, Ph.D. (Center for Biomedical Engineering; Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Pharmacology and Toxicology). Dr. Pappas in collaboration with Dr. Gracie Vargas (Center for Biomedical Engineering; Neuroscience and Cell Biology) proposes to design a set of in situ proteomic optical tools that will allow identification of associations between multiple proteins using fluorescence resonance energy transfer. These studies will allow correlation of multiprotein interactions with ongoing functional modifications of target receptors.

The Center for Addiction Research will announce a second round of grant competition in the near future. Announcements for this second round will be published in the Daily Announcements, Impact, SOM e-NEWS and the UTMB Yellow Sheet.
