An
orientation schedule
has been planned to introduce new
faculty to the UTMB campus as well as offer all faculty an opportunity
to learn more about our institution. All faculty are welcome to attend!
These events will be held at noon in
the Office of the Dean of Medicine Conference Room, 5.106 Administration
Building. Please RSVP to Ms. Eartha Dotson via email, edotson@utmb.edu,
or call extension 22671.
The April Faculty of
Medicine Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2004, 5:00 PM,
Levin Hall South Auditorium. A reception honoring new School of
Medicine faculty will be held
in the Levin Hall
Foyer
immediately after
the meeting.
The Office of Educational Development
announces the Education Dimension Series (EDS) topic for Thursday,
April 1, 2004 will be: “The Art of Giving Feedback.” The Education
Dimension Series is an informal medical education skills activity for
faculty, primarily for SOM faculty/staff, and is held the first
Thursday of each month from 12:00 Noon – 1:00p.m. in Suite 1.102, Mary
Moody Northen Conference Room, Mary Moody Northen Pavilion.
Participants may pre-register for the workshop by contacting Cindi

Vincent A. Fischetti, Ph.D., Professor and
Chairman, Laboratory of Bacterial Pathogenesis and Immunology at The
Rockefeller University, New York, New York, will be the next
McLaughlin Visiting Professor at UTMB on May 5-6, 2004. Faculty are
invited to hear Dr. Fischetti speak on “Killing pathogenic bacteria
like never before,” May 5th, at 12:00 Noon in the Levin Hall
Auditorium. On May 6th his talk will be on “The role of bacteriophage
in streptococcal pathogenesis” at 12:00 Noon in the Levin Hall
Auditorium.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. KENT W. SMALL
Kent W.
Small, M.D., currently Professor of Ophthalmology and Director, Macular
Disease Center, Jules Stein Eye Institute, University of California at Los
Angeles, will join the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Texas
Medical Branch as Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology &
Visual Sciences, and as holder of the Robertson-Poth Distinguished Chair
in Ophthalmology. His appointment will be effective 1 July, 2004,
contingent upon approval of the Board of Regents of the University of
Texas System.

The 2004 UTMB Ashbel Smith
Distinguished Alumnus Award will be given to five UTMB School of Medicine
alumni in honor of their outstanding service to the medical profession. Each year, recipients
for this award are honored at a special Alumni Association reception and
at the School of Medicine
Commencement Ceremony. The award is the highest honor bestowed by
the alumni of the School of Medicine. Recipients are as follows:

Jeane B. Kempner Scholarships have been awarded to six
individuals. The Jeane B. Kempner Scholarships, created under the will of
Daniel W. Kempner, provides to The University of Texas Medical Branch
funds for annual postdoctoral fellowships named in honor of Jeane B.
Kempner. Kempner fellows may carry out their training with any faculty
member of the UTMB School of Medicine. The Fellowship Committee is pleased
to announce the
recipients for the 2004 awards (title
of their research projects and sponsors are included).

The
School of Medicine has been
invited by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to nominate
one faculty member for
The Alpha Omega Alpha
(AΩA) Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award either
in basic sciences or clinical sciences. The purpose of this award is to
recognize gifted teachers for their significant contributions to medical
education. The 2004 program will provide up to four awards and each
awardee will receive $10,000; each awardee's nominating institution will
receive $5,000 to be dedicated to teaching activities; and each awardee's
AΩA chapter participating in the nomination process will receive an award
of $1,000 for support of its activities. Please see the following
criteria:
-
Nominees
must hold the rank of Assistant Professor or higher in either a tenure
or non-tenure track.
-
Nominees’
educational accomplishments should be principally in medical student
education. Nominees’ accomplishments in medical student education will
include innovative work and products in the support and delivery of the
educational program (e.g., technological enhancements to assist medical
students in the learning process).
-
Nominees
should have received prior recognition as outstanding teachers, either
from their institution, another institution, or state, regional, or
national organizations.
-
Nominees
who have published in the field of medical education and whose
educational materials have been adopted by other institutions will be
especially considered.
-
An
institutional system for selecting candidates that provides for broad
student participation and the peer judgment of faculty colleagues will
be favored.
-
Previous
nominees may be nominated again.
If you would like to
nominate an individual, please submit a comprehensive letter of nomination
and a copy of the nominee’s CV by Friday, May 7th to allow time
for committee deliberations and review of application materials prior to
the AAMC's May 31st deadline. Please submit this information
to Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs,
either through campus mail (Office of the Dean of Medicine, Route 0133) or
electronically, lphillip@utmb.edu.

The Howard
Hughes Medical Institute has published a collection of advice, experiences
and opinions from seasoned biomedical investigators and other
professionals as a practical guide for postdocs and new faculty. The
publication, Making the Right Moves: A
Practical Guide to Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty,
may be read on-line or downloaded at
http://www.hhmi.org/labmanagement. The document is 250 pages,
therefore you may want to scroll through it first or pick and choose as
you like. Chapter titles are: obtaining and negotiating a faculty
position and planning for tenure; the scientific investigator within the
university structure; defining and implementing your mission; staffing
your laboratory; mentoring and being mentored; time management; project
management; data management and laboratory notebooks; getting funded;
getting published and increasing your visibility; understanding technology
transfer; setting up collaborations; and course in scientific management.
