DIMENSION SERIES
The Office of Educational
Development (OED) announces the next session in the Education Dimension
Series which will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2003 at noon, Mary
Moody Northen Conference Room (1.102), Mary Moody Northen Pavilion. The
topics for this session are: “Guiding Self-Directed Learners in Clinical
Settings” and “Organizing Knowledge through Concept Maps.” The purpose of
this program is to orient members of the UTMB community in the essential
principles of medical education in order to better meet the needs of their
students, residents, colleagues or other learners. Each session will
include measurable learning objectives, active learning methods, Internet
learning resources, and a brief quiz. This series of medical educator
development topics are held the first Thursday of each month and will
culminate in a Certificate of Attendance. RSVP by contacting OED (71433).

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
announced September 30th that UTMB was selected as the site of
one of two National Biocontainment Laboratories in the country and the
recipient of $110 million from the NIAID for biodefense research. UTMB is
also one of eight Regional Centers of Excellence for Biodefense and
Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the only institution to achieve both the
national and regional designations.
Following the
announcement, U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison toured the UTMB BSL4
Laboratory on October 9th.

Dr. Thomas M. Julian, Editor of the Journal of Lower
Genital Tract Disease, will run an obituary in the Journal’s January, 2004
issue on Tung Van Dinh, M.D., an exceptionally compassionate medical
doctor, who was one of the six inaugural Osler Scholars at UTMB. Dr. Dinh
died earlier this year.

Two School of
Medicine faculty have been named William Osler Scholars and will join four
original Scholars selected two years ago. Together, they comprise the
John P. McGovern, M.D., Academy of Oslerian Medicine. The announcement
was made at the Founders Day Faculty Awards Luncheon on October 3rd.
Dr. Mark D. Holden, Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine
and Dr. Barbara L. Thompson, Professor and Chair, Department of Family
Medicine, were selected based on their history of giving highly competent,
humane, compassionate care and serving as outstanding teachers and role

Ellen
S. More, Ph.D., Member, Institute for the Medical Humanities, and
Professor, Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health, has
been honored by the History of Science Society (HSS) for her book,
Restoring the Balance: Women Physicians and the Profession of Medicine,
1850-1995. The book earned the 2003 History of Women in Science Prize
which will be awarded at the society’s annual meeting November 22nd
in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Reviews of Dr. More's book can be found on
Amazon.com.
In addition,
Dr. More is one of the project team members of an interactive multimedia
exhibition at the National Library of Medicine which opened October 14,
2003. The NIH Exhibit Opening: “Changing The Face of Medicine” features
stories from a rich diversity of women physicians and a broad range of
medicine that they practice in communities across the U.S. See

New faculty
member, Dr. Kirk L. Smith, received coverage in The Brownsville Herald for
work he began as an M.D./Ph.D. student for the organization, Frontera de
Salud. Dr. Smith is the Director of Frontera de Salud, a volunteer service
organization of medical and allied health students committed to bringing

Dr. Lun Li, a
visiting scholar in the Institute for the Medical Humanities at UTMB,
received coverage in The Galveston County Daily News about his research on
the Japanese army’s medical experiments on people in occupied China during

The award criteria for the Jeane B. Kempner
Scholar awards have been changed to allow individuals with MD or PhD
Degrees earned at any accredited institution to work with a UTMB School of
Medicine faculty member. In addition, the Scholar awards will be open to
second and third year students in the School of Medicine to apply.
Advertisements have been widely circulated and students are being
notified. Consequently, over the next month or so, faculty may be
contacted by potential applicants who want to apply for these stipends to
carry out post-doctoral training under faculty supervision. Please see the

10. ATTENTION FACULTY: register for the research retreat
The Research Retreat Planning
Committee is pleased to announce the 2003 UTMB Research Retreat,
“Translational Research: Maximizing Discoveries for Human Health.” Vital
to our mission as an academic medical center, translational research is
the process whereby medical discoveries are moved forward to improve
patient care.
The Retreat will be held
November 20-21 at the Galvez Hotel in Galveston. At the Retreat, you can
join with other UTMB faculty to discuss our role in the evolving national
research agenda, as well as the best methods by which to maximize research
directions that are strategic for UTMB.
You’ll have a chance to discuss
your ideas at breakout sessions focused on enhancing linkages of research
with interventional tools, such as: small molecule drugs, vaccines,
protein therapeutics, behavioral therapies, community health outcomes and
nanotechnology, to name a few. Group reports on November 21 will enable
you to hear the results from other breakout sessions, and understand the
themes emerging from the Retreat.
Register

lead one of the discussion groups, or just sound off on the topic.

The Hedwig van
Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program
for Women is now seeking applicants for its 2004-2005 class of
approximately 45 Fellows. ELAM offers extensive educational, networking
and mentoring opportunities in support of women leaders who aspire to the
highest administrative ranks at academic health centers. Candidates must
be at the associate professor rank or higher, and must demonstrate
significant administrative responsibilities and potential for advancement
to top levels of academic administration.
Individuals who
may be interested in applying for this program must be able to attend the
three educational sessions of 5-7 days each, two at a suburban setting
outside Philadelphia, held in the fall and spring, and one coinciding with
the November annual meeting of the Association of American Medical
Colleges. This is a period of intensive study, emphasizing in-depth case
analyses, experiential learning in small group work and team building,
networking with academic and health care leaders, and financial analysis
and planning with a computerized budget simulation.
If you are, or
know of someone who might be interested in applying for this program,

0133: candidate's statement of what they intend to derive as a benefit

Pfizer has
announced two funding opportunities. Awards of $65,000 each will be
provided for the following grants:
The American
College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF)/Pfizer Postdoctoral Fellowship
Awards in Cardiovascular Medicine
The sponsor awards fellowships
intended to encourage the development and promotion of talented junior
physician-scientists in the field of cardiovascular medicine. Up to two
fellowships of $65,000 per year for three years will be awarded to
accredited U.S. academic medical institutions on behalf of eligible,
carefully selected applicants. Only one application will be accepted per
medical school or teaching hospital with a training program in pediatric
cardiology, adult cardiology, or cardiac surgery accredited by the ACGME
or AOA.
The
Pfizer/American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Foundation Junior Faculty
Scholars Program for Research on Health Outcomes in Geriatrics
The sponsor provides support
for physician-scientists during the critical transition from junior
faculty to independent researcher in the field of geriatrics. Applicants
must hold a faculty appointment at a U.S. medical school and have a M.D.
or D.O. degree. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or permanent
residents. Support is provided for two years at $65,000 a year. No more
than three applications from each medical school will be accepted.

FOR APPLICATIONS – PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICS FELLOWSHIP CLASS OF
2004-2006:
The Public Health
Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) at the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) invites applications for the Public Health
Informatics Fellowship Class of 2004-2006. Individuals with a Master’s or
Doctoral-level degree, in an appropriate discipline (e.g. public health,
medicine, related health-care profession, computer science, information
science, information systems, statistics, epidemiology, health-services
research, or a related informatics discipline from an accredited academic
institution) may apply. This two-year, full-time fellowship has provided
motivated individuals the opportunity to gain further training and
experience in public health and the information systems that support
public health’s efforts. The application deadline is December 12, 2003.
