1.         UPCOMING EVENTS

·     REGULATIONS AND ETHICS IN CLINICAL RESEARCH COURSE

            “Regulations and Ethics in Clinical Research,” is a series of 10 weekly sessions as a module in the Clinical Research Training Program titled, “Clinical Research:  Tools and Techniques.”  This module will begin Monday, October 13, 2003, 5:15 p.m., Children’s Hospital, Room 2.312.  The sessions provide an overview of regulations and ethical principles involved in clinical investigation.  A brochure further describing the sessions is available upon request or at “Clinical Research Training Program” on http://www.utmb.edu/gcrc/education/Ed_EthicsModule.htm. NIH ethics preparation, CME, CME ethics hours, Risk Education, and GME credits are available for selected sessions. 

 

            To register, complete and submit the registration form located on the brochure Internet site, or contact Cheryl Benskin of the Clinical Research Education Office by email chbenski@utmb.edu or phone 772-1484.  The course fee of $45 covers registration, letter of completion, Risk Education, GME credit, and refreshments.  An additional $45 covers optional CME credit for physicians.  (Those who have already registered for this year’s course, “Clinical Research:  Tools and Techniques” do not need to register again for this module.) The schedule of this and other components of the Clinical Research Training Program are available on the GCRC web page www.utmb.edu/gcrc/.

 

·     CHANGE IN DATE FOR FACULTY OF MEDICINE MEETING & NEW FACULTY RECEPTION

      The October Faculty of Medicine Meeting and reception honoring new School of Medicine faculty (appointed between 04/01/03-09/30/03) initially scheduled on Tuesday, October 7, 2003, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, October 15, 2003, 4:30 PM, Levin Hall North Auditorium and Foyer.  New faculty will be introduced during the Faculty of Medicine Meeting; reception will follow.

 

      Future meeting: Thursday, December 11, 2003, 4:30 PM, Levin Hall South Auditorium

·    INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK

      UTMB will be celebrating International Education Week, November 17-21, 2003.

As part of the celebration, a poster session will be held, highlighting the international health experiences of UTMB’s faculty, fellows, residents and students from all four schools, and our international scholars and students.  Posters can focus on research, education and training initiatives, student/faculty exchanges and service/mission projects. This is a great opportunity to share with others at UTMB the broad array of ongoing projects and collaborations between UTMB and our colleagues in other countries, identify students and faculty with similar interests to help generate new collaborations, recognize the contributions of our international faculty and students, and increase our awareness of global health issues.

 

Please forward this information to anyone you know who has been, is currently involved in, or is interested in becoming involved in global health work.

2.   IMH FACULTY/STAFF IN THE NEWS

A guest column by Harold Vanderpool, Ph.D., Member, Institute for the Medical Humanities and Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine & Community Health (PM&CH), ran in the Houston Chronicle, July 10th, on the ethics of separating Iranian conjoined twins.

 

Thomas R. Cole, Ph.D., Director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities Graduate Program, and Michelle Sierpina, Executive Director, Academy for Lifelong Learning, recently have been in the news.  They received coverage in an article regarding dementia patients in the Network for Women's Spirituality, June/July/August publication, entitled "Time Slips.”  In addition, they were covered in the UTMB "Around Campus" section, UTMB calls senior citizens to join peers in new season of Lifelong Learning, which has received a President's Cabinet Award.

 

Anne Hudson Jones, Ph.D., Member, Institute for the Medical Humanities and Professor in the Department of PM&CH, has a film series entitled, “Mental Illness in the Movies” which began October 7th with a speaker for the Paterson Lecture, Dr. Glenn O. Gabbard, The Brown Foundation Chair of Psychoanalysis, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Baylor Psychiatry Clinic at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.  He gave a talk on Psychotherapy in the Hollywood Cinema.  The series will run for four weeks after that, each Tuesday night at 7 PM in the Levin Hall South Auditorium.  See more

3. DR. TERUMI MIDORO-HORIUTI CHOSEN AS NOMINEE FOR PEW SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Terumi Midoro-Horiuti, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, is the School’s nominee for The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences for 2004.   The program is intended to support young investigators of outstanding promise in basic and clinical sciences relevant to the advancement of human health.  Dr. Midoro-Horiuti’s research proposal is entitled, “Effect of Estrogens on Allergic Reactions.”  See more about Dr. Midoro-Horiuti’s research interests at: http://www.utmb.edu/pedi/FacultyDisplay.asp?DocID=44.

4.  APPOINTMENT OF DR. JANICE K. SMITH

Janice K. Smith, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, has accepted the appointment of Director of the UTMB Center for International Health, effective September 1, 2003.  Dr. Smith received her M.D. degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in 1982 and completed a residency in Family Medicine at UTMB in 1985.  She was in private practice in Galveston before joining the faculty at UTMB in 1996.  Her professional background includes Medical Director of the Galveston County Coordinated Community Clinics and medical consultant for the American National Insurance Company. As a skilled clinician and educator, her focus has expanded into international health.  For the past eight years, she has directed an elective course for medical students entitled, “Primary Health Care in Developing Countries,” and leads a medical and dental team to rural Nicaragua each June.  She is currently working on completing her studies toward her M.P.H., with a concentration in International and Family Health, at the University of Texas Houston School of Public Health.  In her new role, Dr. Smith will lead the Center in further developing collaborative relationships with foreign institutions and organizations for the benefit of education, research and patient care.

 

Dr. Smith will succeed Dr. Harold Drayton who has retired from UTMB effective, August 31, 2003.   Under Dr. Drayton’s leadership, the Center has become a valuable international resource on our campus and has broadened programs and activities to promote and support collaboration between UTMB faculty, staff and students and their foreign colleagues.

5.   DR. J. REGINO PEREZ-POLO APPOINTED AS CHAIR AD INTERIM OF HBC&G

J. Regino Perez-Polo, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Human Biological Chemistry & Genetics (HBC&G), has accepted appointment as Chair ad interim of the Department of HBC&G and Director ad interim of the Sealy Center for Molecular Science, effective 1 October, 2003.  Dr. Perez-Polo received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1965 and Master’s Degree in 1966, both from Cornell University at Ithaca, New York.  He received his Ph.D. in 1970 in biophysics from Stanford University where he completed postdoctoral training in neurochemistry.  He was appointed to the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin from 1973-1976.  In 1977, Dr. Perez-Polo joined the faculty at The University of Texas Medical Branch in the Department of HBC&G.  His distinguished career here includes serving as Vice Chairman of the Department of HBC&G from 1988-1991.  He currently serves as a member of the Marine Biomedical Institute, scientist in the Sealy Center for Molecular Science, Senior Fellow in the Sealy Center on Aging, Core Director within the Sealy Center for Environmental Health and Medicine, and staff scientist in the Shriners Burns Institute. Dr. Perez-Polo is internationally recognized for his expertise and scientific investigations in reducing cell death and dysfunction associated with trauma, ischemia and aging in the central nervous system, and has presented his research at medical meetings throughout the world.  His administrative strengths and scientific accomplishments will be very important to the Department during this period of transition.

 

Dr. E. Brad Thompson has stepped down as Chair after serving nearly 20 years in this capacity.  Over this period of time, Dr. Thompson’s leadership of the department has been exemplary.  He has worked diligently to develop the highest standards for the department and in providing the direction and guidance to maintain a strong research and teaching department for so many years.  Dr. Thompson has been looking forward for some time to stepping down as Chair and increasing his focus on personal research activities.

 

A national search will be conducted for a permanent Chair of the Department.  Dr. Kathryn Cunningham, Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, has graciously agreed to chair the search committee to identify a successor.

6.   DR. E. BURKE EVANS APPOINTED AS CHAIR AD INTERIM OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY & REHABILITATION  

Dr. Jason H. Calhoun, The John Sealy Distinguished Centennial Chair in Rehabilitation Sciences and Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation, has indicated his intent to leave UTMB in January, 2004.  Dr. Calhoun assumed the Chair in 1995. Over the past 8 years, he has directed the Department during a period of growth and development of its clinical and educational programs. As the first chair of this newest department, he laid the foundation for its future success within the School of Medicine.   

 

Dr. E. Burke Evans, M.D., Ashbel Smith Professor Emeritus of Surgery, has agreed to serve as Chair ad interim of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation, effective 6 October, 2003.

 

Dr. Evans received his Bachelor‘s Degree from Baylor University in Waco and M.D. Degree from Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston.  He completed a rotating internship and surgical residency training at the Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, California.  His postgraduate training also included a rotating internship at St. Mary’s Infirmary in Galveston, orthopaedic residency training at The University of Texas Medical Branch, and pediatric orthopaedic residency training at Hermann Hospital in Houston.   Dr. Evans began his professional career as an instructor in Orthopaedic Surgery at UTMB in 1953.  In 1965, he became a full professor and served as Chief of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery for over 25 years.   He was named The Ashbel Smith Professor of Surgery in 1991.  Dr. Evans holds several hospital appointments including on the courtesy staff at the Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and Research in Houston, and as an orthopaedic consultant for the Brooke Army Hospital at Fort Sam Houston and the Wilford Hall USAF Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base.  He has written a number of scientific articles and book chapters and serves as associate editor of Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology.  He is recognized for his research in cerebral palsy and for his expertise in orthopaedic management of patients with severe burns.  Dr. Evans has been honored for his distinguished career and recently was presented the John P. McGovern, M.D. Award in Oslerian Medicine in recognition of his compassionate care to patients.

 

A national search will be conducted for Dr. Calhoun’s successor.

7.  APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR JEANE B. KEMPNER SCHOLAR AWARD

The Jeane B. Kempner Scholar Award Fund, created under the will of Daniel W. Kempner, provides to The University of Texas Medical Branch funds for annual postdoctoral fellowships named in honor of Jeane B. Kempner. KEMPNER FELLOWS MAY CARRY OUT THEIR TRAINING WITH ANY FACULTY MEMBER OF THE UTMB SCHOOL OF MEDICINE. The Fellowship Committee of the Jeane B. Kempner Scholar Award Fund is accepting applications for the 2004 postdoctoral fellowship award.

Candidates must have received their PhD or MD degree within the past five (5) years to be eligible and should have strong backgrounds in research with the ability to work independently. Candidates should have achieved academic excellence during their undergraduate and graduate career.

Applications are available at http://www2.utmb.edu/Kempner and should be submitted online without exception. Deadline for receipt is January 2, 2004. Awards will be announced March 15, 2004. 1.       DAVID J. LYNN, M.D., Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was named holder of the HARRY K. DAVIS PROFESSORSHIP IN PSYCHIATRY effective June 1, 2003.

 

2.    DANIEL M. BREITKOPF, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was named holder of the FACULTY PROFESSORSHIP IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY HONORING ALVIN L. LE BLANC, M.D., HARRY M. LITTLE, JR., M.D., AND L. CHARLES POWELL, JR., M.D. effective August 1, 2003.

 

3.     WILLIAM H. NEALON, M.D., Professor, Department of Surgery, was named holder of the LEONARD AND MARIE LOUISE ARONSFELD ROSOFF PROFESSORSHIP IN SURGERY effective September 1, 2003.

 

4.     ROBERT R. WOLFE, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Surgery, was named initial holder of the JOHN SEALY DISTINGUISHED CHAIR IN CLINICAL RESEARCH effective September 1, 2003.

13.  FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

--THE MCKNIGHT TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN NEUROSCIENCE AWARDS

Up to four awards are made annually, each providing $100,000 for two years, in support of innovative research designed to bring science closer to the day when diseases of the brain can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated.   Deadline is December 1, 2003.  For more information, please visit: www.mcknight.org/neuroscience.

-- AMERICAN KIDNEY FUND CLINICAL SCIENTIST IN NEPHROLOGY FELLOWSHIP
