Charles F. Fulhorst, D.V.M.,
Dr.P.H., Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, and Stefan D.
Trocme, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual
Sciences, are the recipients of the Presidential Faculty Development
Leaves for 2003. The purpose of the leave is to further the academic
career of the faculty member and enhance the abilities of the faculty
member to contribute to the creativity and diversity of our missions. Dr.
Fulhorst will collaborate with scientists at the CDC and in Venezuela to

UTMB in
collaboration with the Faculty Innovation Center (FIC) at the University
of Texas at Austin received the Texas Interactive Media Achievement Award
in Education for developing a
CD-ROM-based
learning system. William E. Thornton, M.D., Clinical Professor,
Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiology, UTMB, developed a
hybrid hardware/software system simulating the process of auscultation.
Through the FIC’s media and instructional development services, the system
was designed to provide a hands-on approach to teaching auscultation in
the absence of an actual patient. This system allows students to see,
hear and feel a virtual patient’s heart sounds using real stethoscopes and
specifically designed transducers.
The Texas
Interactive Media Achievement Awards, sponsored by the Austin Area
Multimedia Alliance, “spotlight Texas multimedia and interactive products
and information services notable for their achievement and deserving of
public recognition.”

The Burroughs
Wellcome Fund announced the following message regarding an interruption in
prestigious invited funding opportunities for FY2003:
“Because we want
to prudently manage our endowment in tight financial times, our board has
decided to defer our Career Awards at the Scientific Interface, Clinical
Scientist Awards in Translational Research, and Investigators in
Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease programs for one year.
Therefore, we will not be
offering awards in these areas and will not be taking applications in 2003
for the 2004 awards.
We will, however,
continue to fund the Career
Awards in the Biological Sciences
and
Student Science Enrichment
Program.
If the economy and the stock market improves, as we think it will, then we
will be able to resume support of all our programs in 2005 and accept
applications in 2004.”
