2.   2003 SCHOOL OF MEDICINE COMMENCEMENT

Congratulations to the 191 graduating seniors who participated in the 113th commencement exercises of the School of Medicine on Saturday, May 24th , at Moody Gardens in Galveston.  We salute these new physicians, and their families, friends and mentors who supported them through their studies and helped to ensure their success.

Famed cardiologist Dr. Denton A. Cooley delivered the keynote address and Robert Nason was selected by his classmates to deliver the class address. The winner of the Gold-Headed Cane Award, the highest honor awarded to a graduating medical student, was presented to Angela Langer, Senior Class President, who was chosen by her classmates as the student who best exemplified the ultimate in patient care.

Each year, the graduating class of the School of Medicine elects several faculty to conduct the hooding ceremony along with a faculty member to deliver the physician's oath at commencement in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the students' education. These honors are the highest that a class can bestow.  Faculty who were elected this year by the 2003 School of Medicine Graduating Class were: Dr. Tapan K. Banerji, Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Neurosciences; Dr. Robert E. Beach, Clinical Professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Family Medicine; Dr. Michael C. Boyars, Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine; Dr. Thomas J. “Jackie” Collins, Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Neurosciences, and Dr. Melvyn H. Schreiber, Professor in the Department of Radiology.

In addition, Dr. Schreiber was selected by the Class as the recipient of the James W. Powers Memorial Award.  This award honors a teacher of clinical subjects who, by his or her example and instruction, has contributed in an eminent way to the central task of UTMB--the creation of physicians capable of practicing both the art and the science of medicine.
