2.   ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGE IN THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

President Stobo announced last Wednesday that after more than four years as Dean of UTMB’s School of Medicine, Dr. Stanley M. Lemon has decided to leave his post to focus more fully on his passion for infectious diseases, virology and the intersection of infectious diseases with public health.  Dr. Lemon served as the Dean pro tem for the School of Medicine in 1999 and became permanent Dean in 2000.  Under his leadership the School of Medicine has thrived: the School’s problem-based learning curriculum is flourishing; USMLE scores have improved significantly; there have been many key recruitments to critical leadership positions; there has been reorganization in administration of the Dean’s Office that has benefited the school; there has been reorganization in the school to better address research challenges in the 21st century; there now exists a more cooperative relationship between the school and the hospitals; and the school has been enormously successful in many research activities including emerging infections and biodefense.  Dr. Lemon has agreed to stay in place until a new Dean has been recruited.   When Dr. Lemon does leave the deanship, he will devote his efforts to re-competing for UTMB’s NIAID-funded Hepatitis C Research Center and develop the National Biocontainment Lab (which is now referred to as the Galveston National Laboratory).  The President also announced that he will work with Dr. Lemon to explore the possibility of establishing an institute for immunity and infectious diseases at UTMB.

10.  CALL FOR NOMINATIONS – ELLISON MEDICAL FOUNDATION NEW SCHOLARS PROGRAM IN GLOBAL INFECTIOUS DISEASE

The Ellison Medical Foundation has invited our institution to nominate one candidate to apply for the New Scholars Program in Global Infectious Disease for 2004.  An eligible candidate would be a new independent investigator of outstanding promise in basic biomedical research or clinical sciences relevant to understanding global infectious diseases.

These awards are intended for investigators who are in the first three (3) years of their research career following their post-doctoral fellowship experiences.  As of February 26, 2004, nominees must hold full-time appointments (tenure or non-tenure) on the faculty of the sponsoring institution and they must not have been in such an appointment, at the sponsoring institution or other institution(s), for more than three years as of July 15, 2004.  Time spent in clinical internships, post-doctoral training, residencies or in work toward board certification does not count as part of the three-year limit.  Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholars may hold one concurrent foundation award (such as Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences, Hughes Foundation, Infectious Diseases Society of America, March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, Pew Charitable Trust, Searle Scholars) for up to one year.  This restriction will be applied regardless of whether there is overlap in the scientific content of the awards.

Each award will be made for up to $50,000 per year for a four year period and is intended to provide the support needed to become established in the field of global infectious disease research.  If you are, or know of someone who might be interested in applying for this program, please send the following information to Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Office of the Dean of Medicine, Route 0133: a description of the proposed research (not to exceed four pages), a copy of the applicant’s CV, and a letter of support from the applicant’s Chair or Division Chief.  Please submit this information by Thursday, January 15, 2004 to allow time for review of materials prior to the February 26, 2004 external deadline.  Further details about the program can be found at the following web site: www.ellisonfoundation.org
