1. UPCOMING EVENTS

  •  CHANGE IN DATE - RECEPTION FOR NEW FACULTY

The Reception for New Faculty scheduled on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 has been rescheduled TO Tuesday, October 1, 2002, immediately following the 4:30 PM Faculty of Medicine Meeting, Levin Hall Foyer.  Faculty who have been appointed during the period of February, 2002 through August 31, 2002 will be honored at this reception.

2.  CHANCELLOR Yudof Announces Major Staff Changes for Uts Administration

Chancellor Mark G. Yudof announced major staff changes and a reorganization of the University of Texas System administration on Aug. 23. Searches for new leaders for key offices in health affairs, academic affairs, governmental relations, and community relations will begin immediately, according to Yudof. A new office for educational system alignment is being established to improve the U.T. System interface among higher education, community colleges, and elementary and secondary education in the state. 3.   election to som committees

Once again, web-based balloting will be utilized for the election of faculty to the committees of the School of Medicine.  Eligible faculty may access a ballot at the URL address http://www.utmb.edu/SOMBallot/Committees which will allow them to vote for their choice of candidates to fill vacancies on the following committees:  Academic Planning and Policy, Curriculum, Nominating, Student Affairs, and the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Medicine.  To login, use your e-mail username without the “@utmb.edu” portion and your email password.  The polls are now open and close at 12 Noon on Wednesday, September 4, 2002. 

The Bylaws of the Faculty of Medicine provide that full members (faculty appointed at the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor or Instructor) are entitled to participate in the deliberations of the Faculty of Medicine and to vote upon all business brought before the Faculty of Medicine.  These rights and privileges extend to tenured, tenure track and non-tenure track appointees.

Faculty are encouraged to exercise their right to vote.

4.   DR. ROSALYN STEWART NOMINATED FOR RWJF scholars program

Rosalyn W. Stewart, M.D., Assistant Professor, Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, has been nominated to submit an application to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program for 2003.  This program is intended to strengthen the presence of generalist physician faculty in the nation's medical schools through career development awards to outstanding junior faculty in medical school departments/divisions of family practice, general internal medicine and general pediatrics.  Dr. Stewart's research proposal is entitled, "Interaction of Oxidative Stress and Nutrition in the Development of Individuals Born at Very Low Birth Weight."

5.   DRS. KRYSTAL REVAI & NEENA CHAMPAIGNE NOMINATED TO PARTICIPATE IN SEMINAR

Krystal F.Z. Revai, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, and Neena L. Champaigne, M.D.,

Instructor, Department of Pediatrics, have been nominated by the School to submit an application to the AAMC

Minority Faculty Career Development Seminar scheduled from September 28-October 1, 2002 in Bethesda,

Maryland.  The program is designed for junior faculty (senior fellows, instructors, and assistant professors) who are

also under-represented minorities and who wish to pursue positions of leadership in academic medicine.

6.   DR. KAREN WAGNER APPOINTED TO NATIONAL ADVISORY MENTAL HEALTH COUNCIL

Karen D. Wagner, M.D., Ph.D., Clarence Ross Miller Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, recently was invited to serve on the National Advisory Mental Health Council of the National Institutes of Health for a term beginning October 1, 2002 and ending September 30, 2006.  The National Advisory Mental Health Council advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services; the Director, National Institutes of Health; and the Director, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), on all policies and activities relating to the conduct and support of mental health research, research training, and other programs of the NIMH.

7.   DR. ANNE HUDSON JONES RECEIVES AWARD FROM KEMPNER FUND

Anne Hudson Jones, Ph.D., Member, Institute for the Medical Humanities, has received an award from the Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund in the amount of $2,500 for her film series project that will educate the public to the fact that mental illness can occur in young adults.

8.   dr. thomas r. cole produces nationally recognized film

Thomas R. Cole, Joseph and Anne Painter Distinguished Professor, and Director, IMH Graduate Program, is creator and executive producer of Still Life:  The Humanity of Anatomy, a film aimed at helping students cope with first year anatomy class.  The film was selected for the 2002 Double Take Documentary Film Festival and has been requested by the anatomy programs around the country.

9.   DR. EUGENE V. BOISAUBIN RECEIVES AWARD FROM UT HOUSTON

Eugene V. Boisaubin, M.D., Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Adjunct Professor for the Institute for the Medical Humanities, recently was given the Master Teacher Award by the University of Texas at Houston.  He will receive a $100,000 stipend over the next three years to develop and evaluate a program in Medical Professionalism for the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics and Family Practice at UT-Houston.

10.  JEANE B. KEMPNER POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS AWARD

The Fellowship Committee of the Jeane B. Kempner Scholar Award Fund has announced that applications for the 2003 postdoctoral fellowship awards are now being accepted. These awards present an excellent opportunity for UTMB MD or PhD graduates interested in an academic career to train anywhere in the world. Individuals who are currently in residency training at UTMB may be considered if there are clear indications of commitment to academic medicine. The deadline for the Jeane B. Kempner Scholar Award application is December 2, 2002.  Any questions concerning the application process should be directed to:

11. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - WIM LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AWARD

The Association of American Medical Colleges is accepting nominations for the 2002 Women in Medicine (WIM) Leadership Development Award.  The deadline for nominations has been extended to September 13, 2002.  The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual or a Women in Medicine Organization for outstanding contributions to develop women leaders in academic medicine on an institution or national level.  Any AAMC constituent (group or individual) may nominate one person per year for this award.  An individual nominated last year may be re-nominated without requested back-up. The Award will be presented at the Women Liaison Officers and Academic Chairs Reception/Dinner and Caucus, November 10th in San Francisco. --CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - THE 2003 MARCH OF DIMES PRIZE IN DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY

Nominations of candidates are solicited for the 8th annual prize to be awarded in 2003.  The deadline for nominations is September 16, 2002.  The Prize, consisting of a medal and $250,000, is awarded to investigators whose research has profoundly advanced the science that underlines our understanding of birth defects.  For further details and to download nomination forms, please visit the following web site:
