1. UPCOMING EVENTS
The GCRC will celebrate its 40th
anniversary and the grand opening of its new unit on John Sealy Towers 5A
/5B, Wednesday,
November 13, 2002 from 4pm until 6pm.
Interested faculty and staff are invited to visit the unit and see what
the GCRC has to offer in Clinical Human Research. The GCRC, which has
received continuous NIH funding since 1963, is one of the oldest in the
United States. Its long time commitment to excellence has advanced human
research both on this campus and throughout the nation. Dean Stanley M.
Lemon, M.D. is PI on the NIH grant which funds the unit, and Dr. Don W.
Powell serves as interim Program Director.
Faculty are invited to
participate in an important discussion about the growing complexity of
workforce issues facing the scientific and research communities. On
November 14 and 15 at the Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston, Sigma Xi
will host a forum to address a variety of topics related to the scientific
workforce of the future, including critical human resource issues and the
need to be inclusive. The forum will feature science policy makers such
as Rita Colwell (Director, National Science Foundation), Neal Lane (Rice
University), and Ken Olden (Director of NIEHS). Included in the
discussion will be experts in labor economics such as Richard Freeman
(National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and Harvard University),
Charlotte Kuh (National Research Council), and Paula Stephan (Georgia
State University and NBER). Noted academicians and scientists such as
Evelynn Hammonds (MIT), Shirley McBay (Quality Education for Minorities),
Robert Silbey (MIT) and Willie Pearson (author of Who Will Do Science,
Georgia Tech. and Forum Chair) will contribute yet another perspective. A
final session led by John Yochelson (former president of the Council on
Competitiveness and current Director of BEST - Building Engineering and
Science Talent) will identify features of successful programs in K-12,
academic and industry settings. In addition to these important
discussions, a presentation will be made by Nobel Laureate Mario Molina.
