2002 SCHOOL OF MEDICINE GRADUATION
Congratulations
to the 192 graduating seniors who participated in the 112th
commencement exercises of the School of Medicine on Saturday, the 26th
of May, at the Galveston Island Convention Center, Moody Gardens.
We
salute these new physicians, and their families, friends and mentors who
supported them through their studies and helped to ensure their success.

Each
year, the graduating class of the School of Medicine elects several
faculty to conduct the hooding ceremony along with a faculty member to
deliver the physician's oath at commencement in recognition of their
outstanding contributions to the students' education. These honors are
the highest that a class can bestow.
Faculty who were elected this year by the 2002 School of Medicine
Graduating Class were: Dr. Tapan K. Banerji, Professor of Anatomy &
Neurosciences; Dr. Michael C. Boyars, Professor of Internal Medicine;
Dr. Thomas J. "Jackie" Collins, Associate Professor of Anatomy
& Neurosciences, and Dr. Melvyn H. Schreiber, Professor of
Radiology.
In
addition, Dr. Schreiber was selected by the Class as the recipient of
the James W. Powers Memorial Award. This award honors a teacher of clinical subjects who, by his
or her example and instruction, has contributed in an eminent way to the
central task of UTMB--the creation of physicians capable of practicing
both the art and the science of medicine.

DRS. KARIN N. WESTLUND HIGH & B. MARK EVERS TO SERVE ON NIH STUDY
SECTION
Karin N. Westlund High, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Anatomy
& Neurosciences and B. Mark Evers, M.D., Professor
in the Department of Surgery and holder of the Robertson-Poth
Distinguished Chair, have been invited to serve as members of
study sections for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Center for
Scientific Review. Dr.
Westlund High will serve on the Integrative, Functional and Cognitive
Neuroscience (4) Study Section and Dr. Evers will serve on the Surgery
and Bioengineering Study Section, each for a term beginning July 1, 2002
and ending June 30, 2006. Members
are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and
achievements in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality
of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and
other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.
Service on a study section also requires mature judgment and
objectivity and is a unique opportunity to contribute to the national
biomedical research effort. Study
sections review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make
recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national
advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their
fields of science. These
functions are of great value to medical and allied research in this
country.

For significant
contributions to the study of depression, Robert M.A. Hirschfeld, M.D.,
Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Sciences, recently received the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive
Association’s (DMDA) 2001 Gerald L. Klerman Research Award. The award
was presented at the American Psychiatric Association annual conference
in Philadelphia.
Currently the Titus H.
Harris Chair at UTMB, Dr. Hirschfeld was one of two doctors nationwide
honored by the DMDA this year as a senior investigator. This award
recognizes in part Dr. Hirschfeld’s work toward understanding the
relationship between personality and depression. His research has
revealed that, contrary to what was once thought, depression is not
significantly linked to specific personality traits.
The Award is named in
honor of Dr. Gerald L. Klerman, a Cornell University Professor and
influential researcher, who was prominent in the advancements in
psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, epidemiology and public health.
Dr. Hirschfeld has
chaired the workgroup that developed the American Psychiatric
Association’s practice guidelines for the treatment of bipolar
disorder.

APPLEs
(Advancing the Personal and Professional Learning
of Educators) is a new resource available through the SAHS web
site. It is designed to
give busy educators a few "nourishing" ideas:
1.
Teaching Tidbits: You can directly access awesome sites from
other universities that offer practical teaching strategies (like
motivating students and remembering students' names) and brief overviews of some of the most-discussed
educational constructs (like problem-based learning and critical
thinking).
2.
News for Educators: You will see a sampling of headlines of news
articles recently released in either the Chronicle of Higher
Education or the Chronicle Review, with a direct link to
those two resources.
The
APPLEs column will be updated monthly for access to a regularly
occurring resource. For further details,

The Texas Department on Aging
(TDoA) is awarding grants to government, public, private, and non-profit

Caregivers are defined as an individual who provides care for
person(s) age 60 and older; and grandparents and relative caregivers of
children not more than 18 years of age (including grandparents who are
sole caregivers of grandchildren and those individuals who are affected
by mental retardation or who have developmental disabilities).
The purpose of this research study is to:
1) Quantify the number of caregivers in Texas, 2) Better
understand caregiving in order to develop and enhance community needs
assessment tools, 3) Verify that existing caregiver services are
appropriate, and to build a more comprehensive service delivery system
across the state, and 4) Understand access to caregiver services in
order to target outreach activities in the community.
The research should focus on evaluating who utilizes what
services, when, and at what level?
TDoA is soliciting proposals
for a one time only grant not to exceed the amount of $150,000.
This Request for Proposals (RFP) invites applications from
government, public, private, and non-profit entities.
The application deadline is July 5, 2002, and awards will be made
on August 5, 2002. The
duration of the project is 12 months with final deliverables due on
August 5, 2003.
