January 25-26, 2002

      ·     MENTORING WORKSHOP

A mentoring workshop will be held on Monday, January 28, 2002, 5-7 PM, Caduceus Room, 6th Floor of Administration Building for Division Chiefs and senior faculty.  The purpose of the workshop is to develop a broader understanding of professional mentoring, including a discussion of programs to facilitate career planning and skill development for the mentee. ·     FACULTY OF MEDICINE MEETING & NEW FACULTY RECEPTION

The February Faculty of Medicine Meeting has been changed from Tuesday, February 5, 2002 to Monday, February 11, 2002, 4:30 PM, Clinical Sciences Auditorium.  At this meeting the Dean of Medicine, with the assistance of his staff, will present the "State of the School."  A reception honoring new School of Medicine faculty will be held immediately after the meeting in the Levin Hall Foyer.

2.   APPOINTMENT OF DR. ROBERT E. BEACH

Robert E. Beach, M.D., Clinical Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, was appointed Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs and Director of the Office of Educational Development effective 1 December 2001.

Dr. Beach received his M.D. from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UTMB where he was chief resident in 1982-83.  He completed further clinical and research training in Nephrology at Duke University Medical Center and has served previously as the Director of the Division of Nephrology at UTMB, and Director of Internal Medicine Education and the Family Practice Training Program at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.  He has played a critical role in the medical school curriculum since returning to the School of Medicine at UTMB in 1998, including service as Course Director for the Renal, Fluids, and Electrolytes Course and the Year 1 Practice of Medicine Course, Chair of the Year 1-2 Course Directors’ Committee, and member of the Curriculum Operations Committee.  He has received numerous teaching awards throughout his career, and in October was named as one of the first six John P. McGovern Scholars in Oslerian Medicine.

In his new role, Dr. Beach will provide leadership in the continuous improvement of the Integrated Medical Curriculum, including supervision of the Instruction Management Office (IMO) and the Office of Educational Development (OED).  He will continue to be active in patient care, teaching, and research.

3.   APPOINTMENT OF DR. THOMAS "JACKIE" COLLINS

Thomas "Jackie" Collins, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Anatomy & Neurosciences, has been appointed Director of the UTMB Willed Body Program. In this capacity, Dr. Collins will continue the efforts of Dr. Andrew Payer in managing the Program and supervising its personnel in order to respectfully fulfill the wishes of donors, to maintain the excellence of UTMB’s facilities and programs in anatomy education, and to support the educational needs for anatomic specimens in other programs and departments.

4.   PRESIDENTIAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT LEAVES

Applications are being requested for the Presidential Faculty Development Leaves Program.  The purpose of this program is to further the academic career of the faculty member and enhance the abilities of the faculty member to contribute to the diverse missions of the University.  Faculty who are selected will receive support for their salary and benefits for a 6 month, on or off-campus faculty development leave. To be eligible, a faculty member: must be full time, tenure-track with rank of Associate Professor or above; must have six years cumulative service as a member of the UTMB faculty; must not have received a Presidential Faculty Development Leave in preceding 6 years. Applications should be submitted to the Office of the President, campus mail route 0129, by February 1, 2002. Applications will be reviewed by a special committee representing all four schools.  Committee members from the School of Medicine are:

5.  NIH ISSUES EXTRAMURAL LOAN REPAYMENT RFAs; APPLICATIONS DUE 02/28/02

The NIH has posted two important notices with short application deadlines.  Both notices concern newly authorized and funded extramural loan repayment programs:  The NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Program for Clinical Researchers is now available at <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02-024.html> and the NIH Extramural Pediatric Research Loan Repayment Program is located at <http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02-025.html>.

Applications for both programs are due on February 28, 2002.  Applications submitted by this date will be considered for funding in FY 2002, ending September 30, 2002.

6.  SCIENTIFIC WRITING FOR CLINICAL RESEARCH 2002

“Scientific Writing for Clinical Research 2002,” is a series of 4 two-hour sessions offered by the General Clinical Research Center, Clinical Research Education Office and Department of Pediatrics (Constance D. Baldwin, Ph.D., Course Director).  The course will help participants to develop an effective writing style for all kinds of scholarly documents, with special emphasis on research articles and grant proposals.  The seminars will be taught interactively with constructive critique of writings contributed in advance by participants.  All participants must provide the instructor with samples of documents in progress for group discussion.

This course will begin Monday, February 4, 2002.  To accommodate heavy demand, two sections of the course will be scheduled.  One session is presented on Mondays (February 4, 11, 25, and March 4) from 12 - 2 p.m. and the other session is presented on Thursdays (February 7, 14, 28, and March 7) from 4 - 6 p.m. The course registration is limited, and participation will be confirmed on a first come, first serve basis.

7.  CHANGE TO TAX LAWS MAY PROVIDE NEW TAX SHELTER OPPORTUNITIES

11. GRANT OPPORTUNITIES  

ATTENTION: Faculty in Internal Medicine, Pathology, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Surgery

Our School has received an invitation to submit nominations for the twenty-fourth annual Louis and Artur Award for Research in Circulatory Diseases.  The Award was established through a bequest to McGill University in Montreal and is designed to honor outstanding research in the field of circulatory diseases.  The successful candidate is invited to spend a period of time at McGill University (a minimum of two weeks during the academic year) to have interchanges with members of the McGill community and possibly to undertake a research collaboration with McGill investigators in the field of circulatory diseases.  The awardee or awardees receive $50,000 (Can.) as a prize. Faculty interested in applying for this award should submit a summary of their research and a copy of their CV, or to nominate an individual, please submit a comprehensive letter of nomination to the Office of the Dean of Medicine, ATTN: Linda G.
