ELLISON MEDICAL FOUNDATION
New Scholars Program
The Ellison Medical Foundation
has invited our institution to nominate one candidate to apply for the
Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholars Program in
Global Infectious Disease for 2003. An eligible candidate would be a new
independent investigator of outstanding promise in basic biomedical
research or clinical sciences relevant to understanding global infectious
disease. The goals of the program can be found at the following website:
www.ellisonfoundation.org. Each award will be made for up to $50,000
per year for a four year period and is intended to provide the support
needed to become established in the field of global infectious disease
research. If you are, or know of someone who
might be interested in applying for this program, please send the
following information to Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior Associate Dean
for Academic Affairs, Office of the Dean of Medicine, Route 0133: a
description of the proposed, a copy of the applicant’s CV, and a letter of
support from the applicant’s Chair or Division Chief. Please submit this
information by
January 15, 2003
to allow time for review of materials prior to the February 28, 2003
external deadline.
Senior Scholar Award
The Ellison Medical Foundation
Senior Scholar Award in Global Infectious Disease will be issued in
October 2003. Ten awards are anticipated of up to $150,000 per year
direct cost, with full indirect cost at the institution’s NIH negotiated
rate added to that, for up to four years. Current or past Senior Scholar
Awardees are not eligible to apply. Applicants for the Senior Scholar
Award are expected to furnish evidence of substantial prior scientific
creativity and productivity not necessarily targeted to global infectious
disease heretofore. Evaluation by the Review Group and by the Scientific
Advisory Board will be based upon the applicant’s submission regarding
scientific contributions to date, the quality of publications, and the
importance to global infectious disease of the proposed new research.
The Scientific Advisory Board will pay close attention to arguments as to
why the work does not or would not qualify for support from established
sources such as the NIH. Except for compelling circumstances, the
awards are not intended to supplement ongoing, already funded programs
but, instead, to inspire new directions, which may entail substantial
risk. There is no limit on the number of Senior Scholar letters of intent
from any one institution. Letters of Intent to submit an application must
be received at the Foundation office, no later than 5 PM, EST, February
28, 2003. For more information, please visit the following website:
www.ellisonfoundation.org.
