Our institution has been invited to submit one nomination
for The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences for 2003 which is
sponsored by The Pew Charitable Trusts. The award is intended to support
young investigators who demonstrate outstanding promise in basic and
clinical sciences relevant to the advancement of human health. Each
Scholar will receive $60,000 in support each year for four years. The
criteria for the Program are as follows:
--The Program is
open to individuals with a doctorate in medicine, other health related
professions or biomedical sciences. As of November 1, 2002, candidates
must hold full-time appointments at the rank of assistant professor or
equivalent on the faculty of the sponsoring institution. On July 1, 2003,
they shall not have been in such an appointment for more than three years,
whether or not such appointments were on a tenure track. This time may
have been spent at more than one institution. Time spent in clinical
internships, residencies, or in work towards board certification does not
count as part of this three year limit.
--Candidates
should, on the basis of performance during education and training, have
outstanding promise as contributors in science relevant to human health.
Strong proposals will demonstrate particularly creative and innovative
approaches. Risk-taking is encouraged. An evaluation of earlier
performance from those under whose auspices previous training was
obtained, along with any concrete evidence concerning that performance
that may be available, plus a description of the work the applicant
proposes to undertake, will be the major elements upon which selection of
the successful candidates will be based.
--In evaluating
candidates, the National Advisory Committee gives considerable weight to
evidence that the candidate is an independent investigator and to
significant published work.
--Candidates
to the Pew Scholars Programs in previous years, who were not selected to
receive an award, may be among those nominated by their institutions for
the 2003 Award, if they meet the current criteria.
An
internal selection committee will review applications. If you are or know
of someone who would be interested in applying for this program, please
submit the following information to Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Office of the Dean of Medicine, Route
0133, by Monday, September 16, 2002 (the external deadline is November 1,
2002): a description of the proposed research, a copy of the applicant's
CV, and a letter of support from the applicant's Chair or Division Chief.

for a better UTMB. Previous recipients of this award are listed below.
The award will be presented during the Founder's Day Faculty Awards
Luncheon on October 18, 2002. The recipient will receive a specially
