4.   SERVICES AVAILABLE THROUGH THE GCRC

The General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is a NIH-funded institutional resource that is intended to facilitate clinical research.  Research subjects can be housed as inpatients or seen as outpatients at no charge, as long as they are part of an IRB-approved, investigator-initiated or federally sponsored protocol.  Unfunded projects are also supported, especially if the intent is to generate pilot data that will lead to grant funding.  The GCRC also conducts industry-initiated research, and can house regular hospital patients as well.  The unit is available to both adults and children.  GCRC services include research nurses, a research dietician and metabolic kitchen, computer and informatics support and biostatistical advice.  The GCRC also supports a sleep laboratory, metabolic cart (for indirect calorimetry), whole body counter (for noninvasive measurement of total body potassium) as well as other specialized equipment.  The GCRC is centrally located on the sixth floor of the Children's Hospital.  When appropriate, the GCRC can assist with research patients at other hospital locations.  Additional GCRC outpatient facilities are available in outpatient areas elsewhere on campus.  Check out the GCRC website at http://www2.utmb.edu/gcrc for further details about the GCRC and how it can help you with your clinical research projects or contact Dr. Walter J. Meyer, Dr. Karl Anderson and Joanne Collins at 772-1950.
