INTRODUCTION
OF SOM E-NEWS
In
an effort to enhance recognition of achievements and
communication
with the School of Medicine faculty and staff, the Office of the Dean of
Medicine is pleased to announce the launch of its first email
newsletter, SOM
e-NEWS. News and
information (appointments, searches, events, awards, etc.) pertaining to
the School of Medicine will be featured in SOM e-NEWS in abstract form
and will be linked to the web for more detailed information. SOM e-NEWS will be published on at least a
monthly basis. If you have information you would like published in this
newsletter, please contact Denise Gonzalez, in our office via email (djgonzal@utmb.edu)
or by fax (29598). Please
let us know your ideas and suggestions for this new communication
format. You may send your

LCME LIMITED SITE VISIT
The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) limited site
visit was held from February 11-14, 2001.
It will be some time before we receive any formal feedback from
the LCME, however, members of the site visit team were positive in their
comments about the School and their interactions with the Chairs of the
Departments.

PRESIDENTIAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT LEAVES
Presidential Faculty Development Leaves is an important new program
designed to further the academic career of the faculty member and
enhance the abilities of the faculty member to contribute to the diverse
missions of the University. Faculty
who are selected will receive support for their salary and benefits for
a 6 month, on or off-campus faculty development leave. Details about the

The deadline for this year's applications is April 1st.

THE
JOHN P. MCGOVERN, M.D. AWARD IN OSLERIAN MEDICINE
There is a call for nominations for the first John P. McGovern,
M.D. Award in Oslerian Medicine to be presented at the Alpha Omega Alpha
(AOA) Banquet on May 25, 2001. Dr.
McGovern, a Houston physician and philanthropist, is a lifelong scholar
of Sir William Osler who was a proponent of the integration of
scientific and humanistic principles in the practice and teaching of
medicine. To be eligible, applicants must be physicians with a past or
present association with UTMB who exemplify a commitment to humane
medical practice and teaching. Further

THE ELLISON MEDICAL FOUNDATION SENIOR SCHOLAR
AWARD
The Ellison Medical Foundation is now seeking
candidates for their Senior Scholar Award in Global Infectious Disease
to be given in early October 2001.
The Foundation has established a new scientific research program
to fund basic molecular biological research on parasitology and
infectious diseases that result from microbial, protozoan, or viral
pathogenesis. Please note
that the deadline for submission of the Letter of Intent is March
15, 2001. For further

AAMC--CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
The Association of American Medical Colleges
(AAMC) has a call for nominations for seven major awards to be presented
at their Annual Meeting in November 2001.
The goal of these awards is to recognize individuals and programs
making significant contributions in medical education, research and
community service. Information
about each award, nomination requirements, and deadlines are available

APPOINTMENT OF SHARON S. RAIMER, M.D.
Sharon
S. Raimer, M.D. was appointed Chair of the Department of Dermatology,
effective February 15, 2001. A
member of the UTMB faculty since 1976, she has served as Deputy Chair of
the Department of Dermatology from 1986-1999, and as Chair ad
interim since August, 1999. See

APPOINTMENT
OF JAY MOORE
Mr.
Jay Moore has accepted the position of Associate Director of
Development, School of Medicine, effective February 12, 2001. He comes
to UTMB from the City Manager's Office in Tamarac, Florida, where he
served as Public Information Officer for almost three years.

MAJOR GRANTS AND AWARDS
- The
Carl J. Herzog Endowment for the M.D./Ph.D. Program
has been established. This $1,000,000 endowment will provide support
for two M.D./Ph.D. Scholars. Selection
of the first two scholars interested in translational research will
occur by April 15, 2001, for students entering the program in Fall,
2001.
In addition, a $1,000,000
endowment, The Carl J. Herzog Curriculum in Clinical Science
Endowment, has been established.
We currently are in the process of finalizing the application and
selection process (under the direction of Dr. Karl Anderson).
We anticipate that the initial awards will be made for one or two
students entering the program in Fall, 2001.
