1. UPCOMING EVENTS

    FACULTY OF MEDICINE MEETING

Tuesday, October 2, 2001, 4:30 PM, Clinical Sciences Auditorium.

NEW FACULTY ORIENTATION LUNCHEONS

A series of orientation luncheons have been scheduled to introduce new faculty to UTMB.  Guest speakers will be invited to discuss topics such as our history, mission, goals, policies, services, etc.  The first two luncheons are scheduled on the dates below from noon to 1:00 PM, Caduceus Room, 6th Floor of Administration Building:

October 12th, presentation by President Stobo titled, "UTMB: Here for the Health of Texas."

October 31st, presentation by Brett Kirkpatrick. Director of Library Services, and Dr. Ann Frye, Associate Director of Office of Educational Development. 

Faculty who have been appointed from July 1, 2000 to the present will receive an invitation to these luncheons.

APPOINTMENT, PROMOTION & TENURE WORKSHOP

In an effort to clarify the APT process, a workshop will be held for Departmental APT Chairs and Administrators on Monday, October 22, 2001 from 5-7 PM in the Caduceus Room, 6th Floor of the Administration Building.  The preliminary agenda is as follows:

2.   DR. STANBERRY RECEIVES AWARD FOR BOOK
Dr. Larry Stanberry's book, "Sexually Transmitted Diseases" was awarded a Highly Commended Prize in the Public Health Section at the British Medical Association Book Awards. Dr. Stanberry is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and holder of the John Sealy Distinguished Chair in Pediatrics.

3.   DRS. KLEIN & VINETZ NOMINATED FOR HHMI'S INVESTIGATORSHIP AWARD

Gordon L. Klein, M.D., M.P.H. and Joseph M. Vinetz, M.D. are the School's two nominees for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) National Competition for Appointment of Investigators Who Conduct Patient-Oriented Research.  The HHMI is seeking to identify researchers who show the greatest potential for being able to translate basic science discoveries into useful clinical applications and whose scientific work is guided by their interaction with patients or other human subjects.  Dr. Klein, Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, has made cutting edge contributions to the field of burn care and is currently seeking to identify the humoral and molecular basis for ongoing bone loss in the growing population of pediatric burn survivors with the hope of identifying means of prevention and treatment of this recently-identified but serious and potentially crippling long-term complication.  Dr. Vinetz, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, has become one of our most prominent young researchers, having gained a national and international reputation for excellence in both malaria and leptospirosis research.  He is currently focusing on developing patient-oriented research in tropical infectious diseases not only on the UTMB campus but also abroad.

4.   DR. BERNARD KARNATH NOMINATED FOR RWJ FACULTY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Our School's Selection Committee for The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program has nominated Bernard Karnath, M.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, for this award.  The program offers talented generalist junior faculty support for their research and for enhancement of their participation in the design and implementation of primary care education initiatives.  Dr. Karnath has made significant contributions to primary care education in developing methods to improve the teaching of physical diagnosis, and he is currently seeking to design a comprehensive cardiopulmonary physical exam curriculum that incorporates recorded sounds, x-rays, and both graphic and physical simulation.

5.   FACULTY SENATE PRESENTS RECOMMENDATIONS AT ANNUAL MEETING

The Faculty Senate presented recommendations at its annual meeting on September 18th in an effort to address issues from the faculty survey.  The Senate presented their recommendations to the administration in the three areas listed below: 

 

Clinical Issues

  • Improve billing and collection.

  • Improve patient satisfaction through tracking feedback and scheduling.

  • Improve nursing services by addressing the issue of lack of nurses.  Follow up with an additional survey.

Faculty Development

  • Improve mentoring and orientation of new faculty.

  • Improve understanding of the advancement, promotion and tenure process.

  • Improve the recognition of faculty contributions and developing additional faculty leave.

Research

  • Look for ways to provide mentoring for faculty in the research areas.

  • Find support for both start-up and re-start activities in research.

  • Improve faculty leave opportunities and acknowledge the contributions of faculty in research.

6.   VISIT OF PAGE S. MORAHAN, PH.D.

Dr. Page S. Morahan, Director of the National Center of Leadership in Academic Medicine and Co-Director of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women, visited our campus on September 21st as a consultant on mentoring and faculty development.  She conducted several workshops with an audience that included UTMB women leaders, the President, the Deans of the four Schools, junior and senior faculty. In addition, Regent Judith Craven participated in the various workshops in her role as Chair of the Board of Regents' Special Committee on Minorities and Women.

7.   THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE WELCOMES NEW FACULTY AT RECEPTION

95 new faculty were welcomed and introduced at a reception on September 24th.  These receptions are held twice a year as an opportunity for new faculty to meet the UTMB community.

8.   AAMC GRANT AWARDED TO UTMB STUDENT ORGANIZATION

Frontera de Salud, a student-run, service organization at UTMB recently was awarded the AAMC Caring for Communities Grant.  Grant writers are medical students, Maria de Jesus Munoz, Temoor Anwar, and Crystal Campos. The grant, sponsored by The Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, will allow Frontera de Salud to continue providing primary health care, including gynecological exams, diabetes and cardiovascular screening, health counseling, home visits and community health education to uninsured families without proper access to health care in the Rio Grande Valley. As part of the Caring for Community program, medical schools are eligible to receive support for community service oriented projects in which they explore new ways to serve their communities. The unique aspect of the Caring for Community program is its focus on projects initiated, developed and run primarily by medical students.  The ultimate goal of the Caring for Community grant program is to encourage students to identify untapped avenues of community service.

9. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - WILLIAM OSLER SCHOLARS

President Stobo has issued a call for nominations for UTMB’s first William Osler Scholars.  Funded by an historically generous gift from Houston physician-philanthropist John P. McGovern, M. D., support provided by a recently established $5,000,000 endowment will contribute to the scholarly teaching and patient care activities of 5 faculty Osler Scholars, each to be selected from the members of the Faculty of Medicine and to serve in this capacity for a period of up to 5 years.

Successful candidates will be chosen for exemplifying the principles of highly competent, humane, compassionate, patient-centered care and teaching embodied by Sir William Osler.  To be eligible, a candidate must meet the following criteria:

1) Full-time member of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty Practice Plan (MSRDP);

2) The rank of assistant professor or above;

3) Current involvement in direct patient care activities and in the education of medical students and/or residents; and

4) Ability to commit at least 70% effort to teaching and clinical care.

The deadline for nominations was September 28.  The recipients will be announced October 26 at the Founders’ Day Faculty Awards Ceremony.

10. JEANE B. KEMPNER POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS AWARD

The Fellowship Committee of the Jeane B. Kempner Scholar Award Fund has announced that applications for the 2002 postdoctoral fellowship awards are now being accepted. These awards present an excellent opportunity for UTMB MD or PhD graduates interested in an academic career to train anywhere in the world.  Individuals who are currently in residency training at UTMB may be considered if there are clear indications of commitment to academic medicine.  The deadline for the Jeane B. 11. CLINICAL HYPOTHESES IN IMMUNO-IMAGING PROGRAM

The Dana Foundation announces its Request for Proposals for the Clinical Hypotheses in Immuno-Imaging Program.  Through this Program, the Foundation seeks to support the further development of imaging research that will improve understanding of the detection and characterization of immune cells, and of the movement of immune cells throughout the body.  The Foundation is particularly interested in studies that focus on the interaction between immune system function and brain function.  Selected research projects are anticipated to advance efforts to characterize immune system responses, assess whether attempts to enhance the immune system are effective, and determine whether an immunologically mediated disease process is still active.  Applications are due on October 22nd at noon.  For further information, please visit the Foundation's web site at www.dana.org.

12. STEMMLER MEDICAL EDUCATION RESEARCH FUND 2001-2002

The goal of the Edward J. Stemmler Medical Education Research Fund's annual call for proposals is to provide support for research and development of innovative methods which will enhance the evaluation of those preparing to, or continuing to, practice medicine.  Drs. Steve Lieberman, Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, and Ann Frye, Associate Director, Office of Educational Development, et al, received this grant last year for their project, "High Fidelity Patient Video Vignettes in Computer-Based Testing: Psychometric Properties Relative to Text-Based Vignettes." The application deadline for the 2001-2002 funding cycle is November 12, 2001. Grant awards will be announced at the NBME Annual Meeting in March 2002. 13. CURRICULAR INNOVATION CONFERENCE IN MADISON

Individuals who are interested in medical school curricular reform are invited to attend an upcoming conference, "Curricular Innovation in Medical Education: Preparing Students for the 21st Century." This conference, hosted by the University of Wisconsin Medical School, will be held on October 12-13, 2001 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Guest speakers are a group of nationally known educators, several from the UME-21 curriculum project schools. This conference will highlight innovative educational strategies for preparing medical students and their teachers to meet the health care needs of individual patients and populations in a rapidly-changing health care environment. 14. 2001-2003 SCHOLARS IN EDUCATION CLASS

A new Scholars in Education Class began this month. This is an eighteen-month faculty development program designed to enhance knowledge, skills, and attitudes relevant to teaching and learning in the health professions.
