1.  UPCOMING EVENTS

  • MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS WORKSHOP

The Committee for Career Development along with the Postdoctoral Organization will be hosting a Mentoring Relationships Workshop on Friday, October 19, 2001, 2-5 PM in Room 1.304 of the School of Allied Health Sciences Building.  The workshop will discuss many issues that come up between a mentor and those working for them (graduate students or postdocs).  The schedule is set up so that individuals can come and go to hear discussions on different topics:

  •         NEW FACULTY ORIENTATION LUNCHEONS

A series of orientation luncheons have been scheduled to introduce new faculty to UTMB.  Guest speakers will be invited to discuss topics such as our history, mission, goals, policies, services, etc.  These luncheons will be held from noon to 1:00 PM, Caduceus Room, 6th Floor of Administration Building:

 

October 31st, presentation by Brett Kirkpatrick. Director of Library Services, and Dr. Ann Frye, Associate Director of Office of Educational Development. 

November 29th, presentation regarding 1) SOM coordination of research efforts: Stanley M. 2.  DR. MAYHALL RECEIVES AWARD FOR BOOK

Dr. C. Glen Mayhall, Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, received the Highly Commended Award in the Public Health Section of the British Medical Association Book Competition for his book, "Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control," 2nd edition.

3.  DR. AVERY INVITED TO JOIN BOARD OF ADVISORS-NYLF/MED

A. Nelson Avery, M.D., Associate Professor and Director, Occupational and Environmental Health Services, recently was invited to join the Board of Advisors for the Houston-Galveston area National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED). The NYLF/MED introduces outstanding high school students to the world of medicine.

4.  DR. JINGWU XIE NOMINATED FRO PEW SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The School's Selection Committee for the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences for 2002 has nominated Jingwu Xie, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, for this award.  The program is intended to support young investigators of outstanding promise in basic and clinical sciences relevant to the advancement of human health.  Dr. Xie is an outstanding cancer biologist and cell biologist.  Even at his early age, he possesses the qualities of an exceptional scientist and scholar.  Dr. Xie's work focuses on identifying the cancer genes for basal cell carcinomas by combining molecular and genetic approaches to questions regarding cancer cell signaling.

6.   UTMB STAFF TO PRESENT AT AAMC ANNUAL MEETING

The Association of American Medical Colleges Annual Meeting, the nation's premiere program for medical educators, will be held on November 2-7, 2001 in Washington, DC.  UTMB presenters will be Dr. Michael Ainsworth, Dr. Robert Bulik, Dr. Ann Frye, Dr. Bernard Karnath, Mr. Brett Kirkpatrick, Dr. Steve Lieberman, Ms. Stephanie Litwins, Dr. Chris Stroup-Benham, and Dr. Karen Szauter.

7.   UTMB CENTER FOR BIODEFENSE

The UTMB Center for Biodefense has been established within the School of at UTMB.  This new Center will build on the great research strengths and solid funding that have supported the development of effective medical countermeasures against bioterrorism and biological warfare during the past several years in UTMB’s Center for Tropical Diseases and Sealy Center for Structural Biology.  It will promote the activities of the outstanding faculty that UTMB possesses in the field of emerging infectious diseases, and it will leverage the unique microbiologic laboratories now in operation or planned for the near future at UTMB.  Professor C.J. Peters has agreed to serve as Director of the Center, and Professor Robert E. Shope will serve in the capacity of Associate Director.  Both are dynamic and innovative members of our faculty who are known internationally for their contributions to the control of dangerous and emerging infectious agents that are also biologic threats.

The Center for Biodefense will serve as a catalyst for research and development efforts at UTMB that address an urgent national need.  In doing this, it will take advantage of a wide diversity of research strengths at UTMB, in fields ranging from basic molecular and structural biology, to animal models of infectious disease pathogenesis, to more applied aspects of vaccine development and evaluation within the recently established Sealy Center for Vaccine Research.

8.   PRESIDENTIAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT LEAVES

Coming soon will be the annual call for nominations for the Presidential Faculty Development Leaves.  The purpose of this program is to further the academic career of the faculty member and enhance the abilities of the faculty member to contribute to the diverse missions of the University.  Faculty who are selected will receive support for their salary and benefits for a 6 month, on or off-campus faculty development leave. To be eligible, a faculty member: must be full time, tenure-track with rank of Associate Professor or above; must have six years cumulative service as a member of the UTMB faculty; must not have received a Presidential Faculty Development Leave in preceding 6 years. The deadline to submit an application is February 1, 2002.

9.   ANNOUNCING THE FORMATION OF THE OPS AT UTMB

In an effort to provide information, support, and encouragement to all postdoctoral fellows progressing towards advancement in each of their respective scientific careers, a new organization has been established at UTMB. The Organization of Postdoctoral Scientists (OPS) is open to postdocs from all schools who are involved in basic and/or clinical biological research but do not hold a faculty title.  OPS also welcomes instructors and others who may be performing research as postdocs.  News and information pertaining to postdocs will be featured in an e-newsletter which will be sent out periodically by OPS. 13. GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

Request for Proposals - 2002 Dana Clinical Hypotheses Program in Imaging

The Dana Foundation has a Request for Proposals for the first cycle of the 2002 Dana Clinical Hypotheses Program in Imaging Using Brain Imaging Innovations to Improve Human Health.  This program seeks to advance applications of neuroscience research to human diseases and disorders by facilitating pilot-tests of innovative hypotheses.  Projects involving collaborations with NIH intramural researchers or industry scientists are acceptable.  Although one goal of the program is to make support available to researchers early in their careers, any researcher with a promising new hypothesis is eligible.  Our institution has been invited to submit one application.  Successful applicants will receive grants of up to three years for up to a total of $100,000.

Request for Nominations - Doris Duke Award

The School of Medicine is requesting nominations for the Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award Program. The purpose of this program is to help prepare and support new investigators with a MD or MD/PhD (physician-scientists) as they begin their careers as independent researchers. The program is limited to the development of researchers in cardiovascular diseases, cancer, AIDS, and sickle cell anemia and other blood disorders. The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) has invited our institution to submit up to two nominations for this award (one at the research fellow level and one at the faculty level) per disease area above. A $65,000 award will be made up to two years at the fellowship level and then can be transferred to a faculty level award for the following three years (it is expected that fellowship level awardees will obtain a faculty appointment within 24 months of receiving the award).  A $100,000 per year for direct costs plus 8% for indirect costs will be made for faculty level awardees for three years with the expectation that after the submission and review of a comprehensive progress report, the majority of awardees will be renewed for another two years, for a total of five years of support. To be eligible, candidates:

▪ must be physician-scientists conducting clinical research who have either: (a) completed one or more years of a full-time clinical research fellowship or (b) have been faculty members at the Assistant Professor level or below for three years or less.

▪must have received a MD from an accredited institution on or after July 1, 1990.

▪must have completed two or more years of clinical training and one or more years of a full time research fellowship. 

▪must be working in a US institution but do not have to be US citizens.

A selection committee will be formed to review nominations for this award. If you would like to nominate an individual, please submit a comprehensive letter of nomination to the Office of the Dean of Medicine, ATTN: Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Route 0133, or email at lphillip@utmb.edu by October 19th to allow time for committee deliberations and review of application materials prior to the Foundation's November 8th deadline for letters of nomination.   The deadline for proposals is December 12th.


Call for Nominations - Pfizer Scholar Grants

Our School has received an invitation from Pfizer, Inc to submit a limited number of proposals for the following scholar grants.  Faculty interested in applying for these awards should submit a summary of their research and a copy of their CV, or if you would like to nominate an individual, please submit a comprehensive letter of nomination to the Office of the Dean of Medicine, ATTN: Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Route 0133, or email at lphillip@utmb.edu by the internal deadline to allow time for committee deliberations and review of application materials prior to the external deadline.

Title:  Pfizer Scholars Grants for Faculty Development in Pediatric Health.

Provides support of $65,000 per year for two years to promising physician-scientists who wish to conduct original clinical research to improve the health and welfare of children.    These grants are specifically intended to help physician-scientists make the critical transition into academic faculty status at U.S. medical schools.   To be eligible, the applicant must have an MD or DO degree, completed all clinical and research training and have full-time university faculty appointment at the commencement of the grant, July 1, 2002. Candidates must also demonstrate the motivation and ability to conduct clinical research pertaining to pediatric health, and exhibit a commitment to an academic career in clinical research in pediatrics.  The sponsor will accept only one application per medical school or teaching hospital with an accredited pediatric residency program. Two fellowships are available.

Internal deadline: 10/26/2001

External deadline: 11/30/2001

Title:  Pfizer Scholars Grants for Faculty Development in Clinical Epidemiology.

Support studies such as the burden of disease, costs of disease, diagnosis, etiology, prognosis, or treatment of disease.  Applicant must have an MD or other doctoral clinical degree and have completed clinical training in his/her specialty area; have completed formal research training in epidemiology or clinical epidemiology as of July 2002; have a faculty appointment below the level of associate professor at a U.S. medical school; and have a designated sponsor at the applicant's institution with expertise in their selected area of research.  $65,000 per year for three years.  Two individuals will be selected this year for this grant.  A medical school may submit only one application. 

Internal Deadline:  10/29/2001

External Deadline:  12/14/2001 

Title:  Pfizer/SWHR Scholars Grants for Faculty Development in Women's Health.

Three awards; $65,000 per year for 3 years in biological mechanisms of diseases in women.  Eligible applicants must have an M.D. or D.O. degree with twelve years or less of professional experience in his/her specialty area as of July 2002; have a faculty appointment below the level of associate professor at a U.S. medical school; and have a designated sponsor at the applicant's institution with expertise in the selected area of research. One application per Medical School in each of the following therapeutic areas:  Cardiovascular Disease, Mental Health, or Reproductive Physiology.

Internal Deadline:  10/30/2001

External Deadline:  12/10/2001 

Title: Pfizer 2002 Pfizer/AGS Fndn. for Health in Aging Junior Faculty Scholars Program for Research on Health Outcomes in Geriatrics. 

This new program is designed to help recipients make the transition from junior faculty to independent researcher. Provides $65,000 per year for two years to two physician-scientists who wish to pursue original research in geriatrics health outcomes. Formerly known as the Pfizer/AGS  Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Research on Health Outcomes in Geriatrics.  To be eligible, applicants must have an MD or DO degree; completed at least one year of geriatric medicine, geropsychiatry, or geriatric neurology training as of July 1, 2002 and be Board eligible; not have had a full-time faculty appointment at the level of assistant professor for more than two years at the time of the grant becomes effective; and have a minimum of one year of clinical experience and one year of research training. No more than three applications will be accepted from each Medical School.

Internal Deadline:  10/29/2001

External Deadline:  12/01/2001 

Title:  Pfizer 2002 Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants in Pain Medicine.

The sponsor announces the first annual competition in the Pfizer Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants in Pain Medicine.  These grants are designed to provide training opportunities for promising young physicians and other scientists (MD, DO, DDS, or other doctoral clinical degree) who wish to pursue research in an academic environment; in preparation for full-time faculty status. To be eligible, the applicant must have arranged for an appointment at a U.S. medical School. Individuals who already have a tenure-track appointment, or who anticipate such an appointment or its equivalent during the first year of the Fellowship, are not eligible to apply.  Applicants must have a designated sponsor at the applicant’s institution who is a full-time faculty member with expertise in pain management and must demonstrate a strong career interest in  academic research in Pain Medicine. Two Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants, each providing $65,000 per year for 2 years, will be awarded on a competitive basis. Pfizer will accept only one application in this therapeutic area from each medical school. 

Internal Deadline:  11/05/2001

External Deadline:  12/31/2001 

Title:  Pfizer Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants in Biological Psychiatry.

Provides support of $65,000 per year for three years to promising physician-scientists who wish to conduct basic biomedical research in an academic setting research.  Eligible applicants must: have an M.D. or D.O. degree; have arranged for an appointment to a U.S. medical school and have been accepted by a sponsor who is a full-time faculty member of the medical school; and must not hold a tenure-track faculty position or its equivalent during the first year of the grant.  Two fellowships are available. The sponsor will accept only one application in biological psychiatry from each medical school.

Internal Deadline:  11/19/2001

Cancer Research and Tobacco Research Funding Opportunities

Landon-AACR Prizes. The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) announces the formation of two major international prizes recognizing excellence in cancer research:

Kirk A. Landon-AACR Prize for Basic Cancer Research will recognize significant, fundamental contributions to laboratory research.

Dorothy P. Landon-AACR Prize for Translational Cancer Research will recognize extraordinary achievement in translational cancer research - the interface between basic research and its application to the clinic in the areas of diagnosis, treatment, or the prevention of cancer.

The Kirk A. and Dorothy P. Landon Foundation, based in Miami, Florida, has invited AACR to administer these annual prizes which will promote and reward seminal contributions to our understanding of cancer through basic and translational cancer research. Complete details can be found on the AACR Website at www.aacr.org. The deadline for nominations is November 15, 2001.

Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute (FAMRI) Distinguished Professor Nominations.  The mission of FAMRI is to sponsor scientific and medical research for the early detection, treatment and cure of diseases and medical conditions associated with exposure to tobacco smoke.  Our School has been invited to nominate individuals for a Distinguished Professor Award.  FAMRI seeks to reward individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of tobacco research.  Deadline to submit nominations to FAMRI is October 26, 2001.

2002 General Motors Cancer Research Foundation Awards.  The General Motors Cancer Research Foundation Prizes were established to recognize outstanding contributions in the broad field of cancer research including basic science, epidemiology and prevention, and diagnosis and treatment.  There are three prizes: The Charles F. Kettering Prize for the most outstanding recent contribution to the diagnosis or treatment of cancer; The Charles S. Mott Prize for the most outstanding recent contribution related to the causes or prevention of cancer; and The Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., Prize for the most outstanding recent basic science contribution to the cancer research.  The deadline to submit nominations to the Foundation is October 31, 2001.
