1. UPCOMING EVENTS

  • FAREWELL RECEPTION FOR DR. GWENDIE CAMP

SOM Faculty are invited to a farewell reception hosted by Stanley M. Lemon, M.D., Dean of Medicine, honoring Dr. Gwendie Camp, Assistant Dean for Educational Development, upon her retirement from UTMB on Thursday, November 29, 2001, 4:00-6:00 PM, Caduceus Room, Sixth Floor, Administration Building.  Please RSVP by November 26th, at extension 22671.

·        NEW FACULTY ORIENTATION LUNCHEONS

A series of orientation luncheons have been scheduled to introduce new faculty to UTMB.  The next two luncheons will focus on research services/programs and will be held from noon to 1:00 PM, Caduceus Room, 6th Floor of Administration Building:

The visit of Dr. Stokes, Senior Organization Development Consultant, Johns Hopkins University,  scheduled on December 3-7, 2001, has been cancelled.  Dr. Stokes will be rescheduling her visit in mid to late January.

2.   DRS. WAYNE BOLEN AND JAMES LEE ELECTED TO AAAS

D. Wayne Bolen, Ph.D., Professor, Human Biological Chemistry & Genetics, and Senior Scientist, Sealy Center for Structural Biology, and James C. Lee, Ph.D., Professor, Human Biological Chemistry & Genetics, and Robert A. Welch Distinguished Chair in Chemistry, were elected as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).  The AAAS, with its more than 138,000 members and 275 affiliated societies, is a leading source for information on the latest developments in science.  Election as a Fellow of  the AAAS is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers for contributions to the advancement of science.

3.   APPOINTMENTS TO ENDOWED POSITIONS

The following faculty were appointed to endowed positions:

  • Clarence J. Peters, M.D., Professor, Departments of Microbiology & Immunology and Pathology, was appointed as the initial holder of the JOHN SEALY DISTINGUISHED UNIVERSITY CHAIR IN TROPICAL AND EMERGING VIROLOGY effective October 1, 2001.
  • Sharon S. Raimer, M.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Dermatology and Professor, Department of Pediatrics, was appointed as the initial holder of the JOHN SEALY CHAIR IN DERMATOLOGY effective October 1, 2001.

4. DR. ANDREA WITLIN NOMINATED FOR THE PFIZER/SWHR SCHOLARS GRANT

Andrea G. Witlin, D.O., Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, is the School's nominee for the 2002 Pfizer/Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR) Scholars Grants for Faculty Development in Women's Health.  This program seeks to promote research in the basic biology of serious diseases that affect women. Dr. Witlin's research involves investigation of the hormone adrenomedullin (AM) in placental, fetal, and vascular development.

5.   CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2002-2003 CLASS OF ELAM PROGRAM

The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women is now seeking applicants for its 2002-2003 class of approximately 40 Fellows.  ELAM offers extensive educational, networking and mentoring opportunities to support women leaders who aspire to the highest administrative ranks at academic health centers.  Candidates must be at the associate professor rank or higher, and must demonstrate significant administrative responsibilities and potential for advancement to top levels of academic administration.

Individuals who may be interested in applying for this program must be able to attend the sessions involved, beginning with the first session September 20-27, 2002, the second November 9-12, 2002, and concluding with a session April 24-May 2, 2003.  This is a period of intensive study, emphasizing in-depth case analyses, experiential learning in small group work and team building, networking with academic and health care leaders, and financial analysis and planning with a computerized budget simulation. 

If you are, or know of someone who might be interested in applying for this program, please send the following information to Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Route 0133: candidate's statement of what they intend to derive as a benefit from the program, a copy of their CV, and a letter of support from their Chair.  Please submit this information by January 15, 2002 to allow time for review of materials prior to the February 1, 2002 external deadline.  Up to three applicants from a school may be considered for this noteworthy achievement.  Should a successful candidate be selected from UTMB, the Dean of Medicine will provide financial support for the program fee, travel, and other related expenses.  Applicant(s) who are selected for this program must include in their application packet the nomination of the Dean along with letters of recommendation from their direct supervisor and one other senior colleague.

6.   CALL FOR NOMINATIONS-ALMA DEA MORANI, M.D. RENAISSANCE WOMAN AWARD

The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine announces its third annual Alma Dea Morani, M.D. Renaissance Woman Award.  This award will honor an outstanding woman physician or scientist in North America: who has furthered the practice and understanding of medicine in our lifetime and made significant contributions outside of medicine, for example, in the humanities, arts or social sciences; whose determination and spirit have carried her beyond traditional pathways in medicine and science; and who challenges the status quo with a passion for learning.  The Awardee will be honored during the Foundation's Annual Meeting, October 24, 2002, and will give the keynote address.  If you would like to nominate an individual for this award, please contact the Office of the Dean of Medicine, extension 23967.

7.   10TH AAHE CONFERENCE ON FACULTY ROLES & REWARDS

The American Association for Higher Education (AAHE) 2002 Conference on Faculty Roles & Rewards will be held on January 25-27, 2002 in Phoenix, Arizona.  AAHE is the individual membership organization that promotes the changes higher education must make to ensure its effectiveness in a complex, interconnected world.  Over the years the conference has become a nexus where productive connections are made among institutions and campus leaders.  This conference will have open discussions across faculty/administrative lines and will be helpful to faculty leaders and academic administrators in exploring faculty related issues, addressing the faculty role and its connection to the pressing needs of a changing democracy.  For more information, please visit: www.aahe.org/ffrr/2002.

The ARP and the ATP were created by the Texas Legislature in 1987 as competitive, peer-reviewed grants programs to fund scientific and engineering research projects of faculty members at Texas higher education institutions. The programs are administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.  The following faculty members are recipients of the 2001 awards:

11. GRANT OPPORTUNITIES  

         2002 Pfizer Health Literacy Initiative Scholar Awards Program

         Applicants must possess a doctoral-level degree (eg, PhD, DrPh, PharmD, EdD, or MD) and demonstrate a strong career interest in advancing the study of health literacy.  In addition all candidates must be sponsored by a preselected full-time faculty member at the proposed institution.  Application deadline: January 18, 2002.  For more details, please visit: http://www.som.utmb.edu/announcements/#0

         National Foundation for Infectious Diseases Postdoctoral Fellowships and Grants Program for 2002-2003
