1.   UPCOMING EVENTS

·        2001-2002 DEPARTMENTAL REVIEWS

The following departments will be scheduled for a review during the next calendar year:

·        HONORS AND AWARDS PROGRAM AND WHITE COAT CEREMONY

The Honors and Awards Program recognizes outstanding students and faculty; the White Coat Ceremony is the School of Medicine's formal welcoming and introduction of our incoming medical students to the profession of medicine.  This event will take place on Monday, August 20, 2001 at 4:00 PM in the Levin Hall Main Auditorium.

·        NEW FACULTY RECEPTION

A reception honoring new School of Medicine faculty will be held on Monday, September 17, 2001 at 5:00 PM in the Levin Hall Dining Room.

·        VISIT OF PAGE S. MORAHAN, PH.D.

Dr. Page S. Morahan, Director of the National Center of Leadership in Academic Medicine and Co-Director of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women, MCP Hahnemann University, will visit our campus on September 21, 2001, as a consultant regarding mentoring programs and faculty development.  She will be conducting the following two workshops, each limited to fifty participants:

Topic:           Strategic Career Planning for Faculty I:  How to Hit the Road Running and Stay the Course

2.   DR.  MARK EVERS ELECTED PRESIDENT, SOCIETY OF UNIVERSITY SURGEONS

Dr. Evers, Professor in the Department of Surgery and holder of the Robertson-Poth Distinguished Chair, has recently been elected President of the Society of University Surgeons,  an organization with a membership of more than 1,500 university surgeons from the U.S. and Canada.

3.   THE 2001 SOM CLASS HONORS FACULTY FOR TEACHING CONTRIBUTIONS

Each year, the graduating class of the School of Medicine elects several faculty to conduct the hooding ceremony along with a faculty member to deliver the physician's oath in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the students' education. These honors are the highest that a class can bestow.  Faculty who were elected this year by the 2001 School of Medicine Graduating Class were: Dr. Tapan K. Banerji, Professor of Anatomy & Neurosciences; Dr. James E. Blankenship, Professor of Anatomy & Neurosciences and Physiology & Biophysics; Dr. Michael C. Boyars, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine; and Dr. Melvyn H. Schreiber, Professor of Radiology.

4.   ALUMNUS, DR. JIM ROHACK, ELECTED TO AMA BOARD  OF TRUSTEES

Dr. Rohack was recently elected to a four-year term on the American Medical Association Board of Trustees, receiving the largest vote count in the history of a Board race, even over four incumbents.  Dr. Rohack received his medical degree from UTMB in 1980.  He has served in the AMA House of Delegates and is former chair of the AMA Council on Medical Education.

5.  DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR AAMC EARLY CAREER WOMEN FACULTY SEMINAR

The deadline for applying to attend the AAMC Early Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar has been extended to July 9th. The Office of the Dean of Medicine will sponsor three women faculty from the School of Medicine to attend this seminar scheduled for December 1-4, 2001.  The seminar is designed for women early in their first faculty appointment who are aiming for a leadership position in academic medicine (associate professors are not eligible).  Those interested in applying for this program should submit their CV and a one-page summary of their goals for the seminar and how it will impact their career to Dr. Linda Phillips, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Office of the Dean of Medicine, Route 0133, by the above deadline.

6.   DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR THE SCHOLARS IN EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Office of Educational Development continues to accept faculty nominations to the upcoming Scholars in Education Program. The nomination deadline has been extended to July 20, 2001, should you wish to nominate faculty from your school that may benefit from this eighteen month program in academic and professional development. 7.  NORMAN HACKERMAN AWARD IN CHEMICAL RESEARCH

The Welch Foundation has invited our institution to submit up to two nominations for the first Norman Hackerman Award in Chemical Research.  The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize young chemical scientists in Texas for their past research endeavors.  Not only is this award meant to recognize the scientist's work, but it should also encourage those embarking on careers dedicated to increasing our fundamental understanding of chemistry.  The award is not intended to further any research activities of the recipient nor is the recipient required to render any future service as a condition of receiving the award.  A $100,000 award will be made on an annual basis.  To be eligible, candidates:

must be 40 years of age or younger on June 30th for the year in which nominated; since this will be the 2002 award, nominees must be 40 or less on June 30, 2002.

should have spent the most recent three (3) years doing chemical research in Texas. 

The deadline to submit nominations is September 15th.  A Selection Committee will be appointed to review nominations for this prestigious award. Further details regarding the nomination process will be forthcoming.

8.  THE PAUL & DAISY SOROS FELLOWSHIPS FOR NEW AMERICANS

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields.  This award will provide a maintenance grant of $20,000 and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost each year, for up to two years of graduate study in any subject anywhere in the U.S.  Candidates must be either holders of Green Cards, naturalized citizens, or children of two naturalized citizen parents.  The deadline to submit the application package is November 30, 2001.  For further information, please visit the following web site: www.pdsoros.org.

9.   ACGME ANNOUNCES THE PARKER J. PALMER AWARDS PROGRAM

To honor the best teachers in graduate medical education, the ACGME will recognize ten outstanding program directors with the Parker J. Palmer "Courage to Teach" Award. This award will be presented in February 2002.  Nomination procedures can be found at the ACGME web site below. The deadline for nominations is August 15, 2001.

10.  REVIEW OF YEARS 3 & 4 OF THE CURRICULUM

The Curriculum Committee, with input from the faculty, has embarked on a review of years 3 & 4 of the curriculum.  The kickoff for this review began May 22nd. Seven Task Forces have been established, each addressing one of the following themes which runs throughout years 3 & 4: professionalism and professional development, scholarship, clinical reasoning and clinical skills, clinical content and experience, student assessment, training environment and interdisciplinary education.  The goal is to decide what the ideal curriculum should look like, identify how close we are to this, and what needs to be done to achieve the goals and objectives in establishing an ideal curriculum. Final reports from the Task Forces are due in early November for review by the Curriculum Committee.  The plan is to present this information to the Faculty of Medicine at the December 4th meeting.

11. NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM ON MEDICINE

UTMB will be hosting the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine on Tuesday, July 17 and Tuesday, July 31st. The forum is designed to introduce high school students interested in the medical field to the responsibilities and challenges of providing patient care in the clinical setting.  Students will get to shadow medical professionals during a "typical day."  Not only is this a recruitment opportunity but also an opportunity to showcase our personnel, services and facilities.  Faculty interested in participating may contact Casey Peterson at ext. 78504.

12. SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE OFFICE OF EDUCATION

13. SEARCHES

Chair, Department of Internal Medicine:  William Busse, M.D., from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will be coming in for a visit on June 27-28.  Two candidates from Johns Hopkins have been invited for a second visit in July: Joe G. N. Garcia, M.D. (July 15-17) and Michael J. Klag, M.D., M.P.H. (July 22-25).

Chair, Department of Neurology:  The search committee will be inviting six or seven candidates to visit during the summer.  .

Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs: Five candidates have been invited to visit and additional candidates are scheduled to visit the campus, including those returning for a second visit.
