·      MENTORING WORKSHOP

A mentoring workshop will be held on Monday, January 28, 2002, 5-7 PM, Caduceus Room, 6th Floor of Administration Building for Division Chiefs and senior faculty.  The purpose of the workshop is to develop a broader understanding of professional mentoring, including a discussion of programs to facilitate career planning and skill development for the mentee. ·     FACULTY OF MEDICINE MEETING & NEW FACULTY RECEPTION

The February Faculty of Medicine Meeting has been changed from Tuesday, February 5, 2002 to Monday, February 11, 2002, 4:30 PM, Clinical Sciences Auditorium.  At this meeting the Dean of Medicine, with the assistance of his staff, will present the "State of the School."  A reception honoring new School of Medicine faculty will be held immediately after the meeting in the Levin Hall Foyer.

2.   APPOINTMENT OF DR. LEONARD E. SWISCHUK

Leonard E. Swischuk, M.D., Professor, Department of Radiology, was appointed Chairman of the Department of Radiology, effective 15 November, 2001.  Dr. Swischuk has been a member of the faculty of the School of Medicine since July, 1970.  He has held an appointment as Professor in the Departments of Radiology and Pediatrics since September, 1973, and has served as Chairman ad interim of the Department since 1999.  A specialist in pediatric radiology, he received his medical degree from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 1960, and underwent subsequent graduate training in Canada at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, the University Hospital in Saskatoon, and at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City.  In this role, Dr. Swischuk will continue to lead the Department of Radiology in enhancing their clinical services, level of scholarship and research activities.

3.   APPOINTMENT OF DR. MARILYN MARX

Marilyn Marx, M.D., Associate Professor of Surgery, has been appointed as Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Practice and Physician Chief Executive of the Faculty Practice, effective 1 January, 2002.  Dr. Marx will replace Dr. Don Prough, who has served in this capacity on an ad interim basis since the restructuring of the UTMB administration in August, 1999.  Dr. Marx, who is trained as a general surgeon and who has previously practiced in the community, currently serves as Chief Medical Director of the Faculty Practice and Assistant Dean for Faculty Practice.  As Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Practice, Dr. Marx will oversee all aspects of the medical school faculty practice, with a strong focus on strategic planning and the future development of the practice.  She brings a wealth of experience and formal training in practice management to this position.

4.  DR. JAMES C. THOMPSON RECEIVES 2001 SHEEN AWARD

James C. Thompson, M.D., Ashbel Smith Professor Emeritus, Department of Surgery, received the 2001 Sheen Award for his outstanding contributions to the medical profession.  Nominees are recommended by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the award is presented at the annual convention of the New Jersey Chapter of the ACS. The award is given to influential leaders of the nation's medical community.   Dr. Thompson's work has contributed immeasurably to patient care, surgical research and medical education. 5.  DR. ANNE JONES SELECTED TO RECEIVE THE 2003 DAVIES AWARD

Anne Hudson Jones, Ph.D., Member, Institute for the Medical Humanities, has been selected to receive the 2003 Nicholas E. Davies Memorial Scholar Award for scholarly activities in the humanities and history of medicine.  The award, given by the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Internal Medicine, will be presented to Dr. Jones in 2003 .  She is only the second non-physician to be chosen for this singular honor.

6.   DR. JEFF DAVIS ELECTED TO ABMS

Dr. Jeff Davis, Director, Preventive, Occupational & Environmental Medicine (POEM), recently was elected for a three-year term to the Executive Committee of the American Board of Medical Specialties.  The term will begin March, 2002 through March, 2005.  Dr. Davis was nominated by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, where he currently serves as Chair, and supported for this nomination by the American Board of Family Practice.

7.   DR. B. MARK EVERS SELECTED FOR THE NIH MERIT AWARD

B. Mark Evers, M.D., Professor, Department of Surgery, has been recognized for his outstanding record of scientific achievements as a principal investigator on National Institute on Aging research projects.  His recently approved application has been selected by the National Advisory Council on Aging for the National Institutes of Health Method to Extend Research in Time (MERIT) Award.  Dr. Evers has distinguished himself through his research in aging and continues to make significant contributions to the field.  The MERIT Award provides scientists with several features in grant support and in availability of funds.

8.   DR. LINDA G. PHILLIPS WILL SERVE AS MODERATOR FOR AAMC CONFERENCE 

Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, has been invited to be a moderator for one of the sessions at the next Association of American Medical Colleges Faculty Affairs Professional Development Conference in August, 2002 in Park City, Utah.   The Conference is designed for faculty affairs and faculty development administrators, chairs of relevant institutional committees and other staff responsible for faculty management.

9.   JOHN HAYS AWARDED KECK FOUNDATION PREDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP 

John Hays, M.D-Ph.D. student, was awarded the first predoctoral fellowship in the Keck Center for Computational and Structural Biology.  The Keck Center, through the support of its partner schools (UTMB, Rice, Baylor, MD Anderson, University of Houston and UT Houston), is the training base of the recently created Gulf Coast Consortia.  The fellowship is supported through the Keck Foundation as well as several NIH training grants. Additional pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training slots are available for highly qualified candidates in computational and structural biology. 10. STUDENT LOAN RELIEF IS AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCHERS 

Clinical researchers may look into the NIH’s Loan Repayment Program, which gives grantees who conduct patient-oriented research or pediatricians in basic or clinical research up to $35,000 to repay educational loans.  Beginning December 28, applications will be available online. 11. MINORITY TRAINEE RESEARCH FORUM 

The Minority Trainee Research Forum will be held in San Diego, California from March 16-18, 2002. This NIH-funded scientific meeting will showcase underrepresented minority trainees in the biomedical pipeline who are committed to a research career, and who have engaged in serious research. The forum will select 72 winners from a national abstract competition: 12 post doctoral trainees, 12 Ph.D. trainees, 12 M.D.-Ph.D. trainees, 12 M.D.  trainees, 12 college trainees, and 12 high school trainees. Each day 24 winners will give a 15-minute oral presentation of their research, as well as stand in the daily poster session. If you are aware of serious trainees who have conducted wet bench research, please share with them the attached information about the abstract competition. Faculty are encouraged to attend this exciting scientific meeting. Please note that there is no registration fee. 12. PRESIDENTIAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT LEAVES

UTMB announces its annual call for applications for the Presidential Faculty Development Leaves Program.  The purpose of this program is to further the academic career of the faculty member and enhance the abilities of the faculty member to contribute to the diverse missions of the University.  Faculty who are selected will receive support for their salary and benefits for a 6 month, on or off-campus faculty development leave. To be eligible, a faculty member: must be full time, tenure-track with rank of Associate Professor or above; must have six years cumulative service as a member of the UTMB faculty; must not have received a Presidential Faculty Development Leave in preceding 6 years. Representatives from Applications should be submitted to the Office of the President, campus mail route 0129, by February 1, 2002. Application will be reviewed by a special committee representing all four schools.  Committee members from the School of Medicine are:

James S. Goodwin, M.D., Internal Medicine-Geriatrics

13.  DEADLINES EXTENDED FOR APPLICATIONS TO SEMINAR

The internal deadline has been extended to January 4, 2002 (the external deadline is January 30, 2002) for submitting an application to attend the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar scheduled for June 22-25, 2002 in Washington, DC.  The seminar is for women at the assistant professor (with a minimum of four years experience in the position) and associate professor levels.  It is targeted primarily to physicians but is also pertinent to Ph.D. scientists. The program offers women faculty the opportunity to develop leadership and management skills.

Since three times more individuals apply than can be accommodated, early application is advised. Those interested in applying for this program should submit the following information to the Office of the Dean of Medicine, my attention:  a one page summary of their goals for the seminar and how it will impact their career, a copy of their CV, and a letter of support from their Chair or Division Chief addressed to the Meetings Registration Department of the AAMC.  This letter should describe how the applicant's goals for attending the seminar relate to her work and professional aspirations. This office will provide financial support for the registration fee, travel and other related expenses for up to four members of the Faculty of Medicine who wish to undertake this training.
