1. UPCOMING EVENTS

·        Clinical Research: Tools and Techniques Course

      “Clinical Research: Tools and Techniques” is a series of 37 weekly sessions offered by the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) and Clinical Research Education Office (CREO, Karl E. Anderson, M.D. Course Director). This course will begin Monday, August 13, 2001, 5:15 p.m., Children’s Hospital, Room 2.312. The sessions provide an overview of ethics, methods, and issues in the conduct of research involving human subjects. A brochure further describing the sessions is available upon request or at “Clinical Research Education & Training Programs” on http://www2.utmb.edu/gcrc/.  CME ethics hours, Risk Education, and GME credits are available for selected sessions.

To register, complete and submit the registration form located on the brochure internet site, or contact Marie Carr of the Clinical Research Education Office by email creo.utmb@utmb.edu or phone 772-1484. The course fee of $45 covers registration, letter of completion, Risk Education and GME credit, and refreshments. An additional $45 covers optional CME credit for physicians. The schedule of this and other components of the Clinical Research Education & Training Program are available on the GCRC web page.

·        HONORS AND AWARDS PROGRAM AND WHITE COAT CEREMONY

      The Honors and Awards Program recognizes outstanding students and faculty; the White Coat Ceremony is the School of Medicine's formal welcoming and introduction of our incoming medical students to the profession of medicine.  This event will take place on Monday, August 20, 2001 at 4:00 PM in the Levin Hall Main Auditorium

·        NEW FACULTY RECEPTION

A reception honoring new School of Medicine faculty will be held on Monday, September 17, 2001 at 5:00 PM in the Levin Hall Dining Room.

·        VISIT OF PAGE S. MORAHAN, PH.D.

Dr. Page S. Morahan, Director of the National Center of Leadership in Academic Medicine and Co-Director of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women, MCP Hahnemann University, will visit our campus on September 21, 2001, as a consultant regarding mentoring programs and faculty development.  She will be conducting the following two workshops, each limited to fifty participants:

1-3 PM

Audience:   Faculty, especially junior faculty

Topic:               Strategic Career Planning for Faculty I:  How to Hit the Road Running and Stay the Course

•Basic steps of career self-management

•How to develop scholarship out of your everyday work

•How to be your own best mentor

•Next steps in your career

3-5 PM

Audience:   Faculty, especially senior faculty

Topic:               Strategic Career Planning for Faculty II:  Reflect, Refocus, and Renew your Academic Career

•Basic steps of career self-management

•Normal cycles in jobs, careers and life

•How to make job/career transitions

•Next steps in your career

There is space availability for both workshops.  Faculty who are interested in attending may call the Office of the Dean of Medicine, ext. 23967, to be placed on the list.

·        THE 19TH TEXAS REGIONAL IMMUNOLOGY CONFERENCE

The conference will be held in Oklahoma City from Friday, November 9 to Sunday, November 11, 2001.  On Friday evening, Dr. Gary Koretzky of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, will present the Kampschmidt Lecture, sponsored by the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.  A reception will follow the lecture.  The remainder of the program will be devoted to oral and poster presentations.  A banquet will be held on Saturday evening and the conference will adjourn at 12 noon on Sunday.  For more information, please visit the following web site: http://www.omrf.ouhsc.edu/OMRF/Seminars/2001Immunology/Welcome.asp

2.   MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR REBECA DIAZ

A memorial service will be held for Rebeca (Becky) Diaz, a fourth year medical student, on Tuesday, August 7, 2001, 5:00 PM, Levin Hall Main Auditorium.  Becky and her husband, Tom, died in a car accident on Saturday, July 28.  A memorial scholarship fund is being set up as a tribute to them.  For those of you who wish to make a contribution, please contact Ms. Judy Slocumb-Farrell, jslocumb@utmb.edu <mailto:jslocumb@utmb.edu>

3.  ESTABLISHMENT OF SEALY AND SMITH CHAIRS

Through the generosity of The Sealy and Smith Foundation, UTMB has established the following three chairs to support our mission of achieving a higher level of excellence:

1) Distinguished University Chair in Tropical Medicine to support the work of the Director of the new Biosafety Laboratory Level 4 (BSL-4) facility - $1,000,000 (UTMB will match the $1M grant);

2) Endowed Chair in Dermatology to support the work of the Chair of the Department of Dermatology - $500,000;

3) Endowed Chair in Neurology to support the work of the Chair of the Department of Neurology - $500,000.

4.   FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES AUXILIARY PRESENTS CHECK TO SOM

The Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, presented a $13,000 check last month to Dr. Linda G. Phillips, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, on behalf of the School of Medicine.  This gift is intended to support our programs in heart, kidney and diabetes research.

5.   DR. ALVIN L. LEBLANC RECEIVES GIENAPP AWARD

Alvin L. LeBlanc, M.D., Associate Dean Emeritus for Graduate Medical Education, is the recipient of the 2001 John C. Gienapp Award.  The award was established in honor of Dr. Gienapp who served as the Executive Director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education  (ACGME) for 19 years and who made major contributions to graduate medical education.  Dr. LeBlanc will receive the award early next year from the ACGME in appreciation of his leadership, vision and many accomplishments in graduate medical education.

6.   DR. LINDA PHILLIPS RECEIVES NINA STARR BRAUNWALD AWARD

Linda G. Phillips, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery, has been chosen by the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) to receive its Nina Starr Braunwald Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the advancement of women in surgery.  The award will be presented at the AWS Fall Conference in October.

7.   APPOINTMENT OF LAUREE THOMAS, M.D.

Dr. Lauree Thomas has accepted appointment as Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions in the School of Medicine, effective July 30, 2001.  Dr. Thomas will be responsible for the administration of the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions, overseeing programs and activities related to student recruitment, admissions, retention, residency application and graduation. 

Dr. Thomas received her M.D. in 1979 at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison.  She completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Wisconsin.   Her career includes work in urgent care and geriatrics and gerontology at the Sinai Samaritan Hospital and Veterans Administration Hospital in Milwaukee.  In 1989, Dr. Thomas joined the faculty at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology, and also served as Assistant Dean for Minority Student Affairs.  From 1994-1999 she held the position of Associate Dean for Minority Student Affairs.  During her tenure at MCW, she developed programs for minority students and faculty, resulting in an increase in minority student enrollment and in the number of minority faculty.  Moreover, she secured grants, endowments and scholarships which assisted in student recruitment. Although minority students were her primary responsibility at MCW, she was heavily involved in all areas of academic administration and was well known as an advocate and resource for all students.

The members of the APT Committee have elected a new Chair, Dr. Miles Cloyd, Professor, Department of Microbiology & Immunology. Dr. David McCormick, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, will serve as Vice Chair.

10.  DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR GENERALIST PHYSICIAN FACULTY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The internal deadline has been extended to August 15, 2001 for submitting an application to The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program.  This program offers talented generalist junior faculty support for their research and for enhancement of their participation in the design and implementation of primary care education initiatives.  Up to fifteen four-year awards of $300,000 will be made to sponsoring institutions to help cover the Scholars' salary and research costs.  A medical school may nominate one physician per year. 

To be eligible, candidates must meet the following the criteria:

▪be a physician who is a U.S. citizen

▪be a junior faculty member in family practice, general internal medicine, or general pediatrics

▪desire a successful career in medicine

▪provide evidence of research skills, have at least two papers published in peer reviewed journals

▪demonstrate excellence as a teacher

▪show a clinical commitment to generalism by caring for a defined panel of patients.

11. FACULTY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO INTERVIEW MEDICAL STUDENTS

Faculty volunteers are still needed to interview medical students.  This will require being a part of a faculty pool to interview applicants on Fridays from August through mid-December, and some Wednesdays in November and December.  Interviews have traditionally been scheduled at 10:15 & 11:00 a.m. and 1:15 and 2:00 p.m., and are currently scheduled to last 30 minutes. Completing the paperwork for review by the Medical School Admissions Committee takes an additional 10 to 20 minutes, making your time commitment approximately 45 minutes per interview.
