SUBJECT:     Change in Community-Based Clinics Leadership

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Barbara L. Thompson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, holder of the Sealy Hutchings and Lucille Wright Hutchings Chair in Family Medicine, and Assistant Dean, Faculty Practice, will succeed Dr. Christine Turley, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, who has indicated her desire to step down as Medical Director, Community Based Clinics, effective September 1, 2004. We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Thompson, who has been serving in an interim capacity as Medical Director of the University Outpatient Clinics, has agreed to continue these responsibilities on a permanent basis. Dr. Thompson has provided outstanding medical leadership to University Outpatient Clinics operations since assuming these duties, and we are very pleased that the medical directorship of both UTMB’s on-campus and community-based clinics will now be consolidated.

We wish to acknowledge with gratitude the leadership provided by Dr. Turley, who has served as Medical Director of the Community Based Clinics since October 1, 2001. Her contributions to the Community Based Clinics have been substantial, including an in-depth review of the compensation of community based clinic physicians and implementation of a new compensation structure and incentive program, as well as the implementation of Open Access. She has navigated clinic administration through retirements and other significant changes in provider personnel while maintaining a high level of patient satisfaction with the services provided. We are grateful to Dr. Turley for her exceptional service and for her many contributions to the institution while she served in this role. Dr. Turley will continue her activities related to teaching, patient care and clinical trials in the Department of Pediatrics and with the Faculty Group Practice.

Please join us in thanking Dr. Turley for her service to UTMB as Medical Director of the Community Based Clinics, and in supporting Dr. Thompson as she assumes these additional responsibilities.

cc: Senior Associate, Associate and Assistant Deans, School of Medicine
