It is my distinct pleasure to announce the appointment of Gregory L. Katzman, M.D., M.B.A. as Chair of the Department of Radiology, effective May 1, 2007.

 

Dr. Katzman currently serves an as the Chief of Radiology Research and Vice Director for the Utah Center for Advanced Imaging Research at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he is an Associate Professor for Radiology and Medical Informatics. Dr. Katzman also serves as the Chief of the Radiology Department for the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System.

 

Dr. Katzman has extensive experience in the education, research and clinical arenas, and currently serves as co-investigator on two NIH Grants, one assessing the diagnostic efficacy of morphological measurements obtained from MRI/MRA and the other focused on substantially improving the ability of MRI and MRA to provide an unambiguous evaluation of the intracranial vasculature. He is also well versed in the importance of translational research, and was instrumental in developing the infrastructure and funding for the Utah Center for Advanced Imaging Research.

 

He is currently the editor for Amirsys, Inc. Radiology textbooks, and serves on the Editorial Board of the American Society of Neuroradiology, Electronic Education Committee Publications. He also serves as a Referee for Investigative Radiology and for the American Journal of Neuroradiology.

 

Dr. Katzman earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with High Distinction and a master’s degree in Zoology from Indiana University. He earned a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and received the David K. Johnlov Award for Best Medicine Student.  Dr. Katzman recently earned an EMBA from the University of Utah. He completed a residency in radiology at Methodist Hospital of Indiana and completed fellowships in Neuroradiology at Georgetown University and the National Institutes of Health.

 

Dr. Katzman is the author or co-author of numerous publications, and has written a book on the Characterization of the chloroplastic carbonic anhydrase in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. He is a member of the AOA Medical Honorary Society, and has received several awards, including the Outstanding Performance Award from VISN 19 Health Care System and the Award for Distinguished Service from the American College of Radiology.

 

We are looking forward to Dr. Katzman’s enthusiastic leadership in the Department of Radiology at this important time in UTMB’s history. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Katzman and his wife Sandra to the UTMB community.
